Starting out. Help Wanted!!!

I’m somewhat new to DJing,
However I am looking for some opinions and options on good starting Controllers. My budget is roughly around $800.

After researching for 2 weeks, I think the S2 will fit my needs (s4 is overkill and I intend on using Traktor) and perhaps a Midi Fighter classic. Would I even need a Midi Fighter if I have the S2?? Finally would these two work well together and work well to my needs???

Any suggestions for alternative controllers??

I appreciate any replies and any help

Personally mate, I’d go for a Hercules or numark to begin with.

Don’t go throwing everything at a hobbie that you may HATE after a couple of months!

Why not try a couple of the demo versions of software? Rather than just go for traktor  as you’ve probably read, alot of people on here use traktor. But ableton or serato might be better for your needs.

Just don’t jump into something so big, too soon.

I have both a Hercules and Midi Fighter Classic for sale

And there’s your man  much better than going straight to an S2

I’ve had the demo for Traktor 3 weeks now, I had VDJ pro for nearly 2 years (got it pirated). Been contemplating buying Dj equipment for awhile. I still have yet to try Serato but i havent heard many good things about Ableton.
Whats the model of the Hercules???

Wouldn’t talk about pirated stuff here mate.

It’s a Steel. More buttons than the RMX and fully metal. Does not have a soundcard however.

Honestly if I was in your position, i’d just get the S2. Midifighter classics are fun to play around with, but I feel like I don’t use it as much as I did when I first bought mine. That being said, i’d definitely buy one second hand though for like $100 ~ $150ish.

I wouldn’t say using VDJ for 2 years is relatively new to DJ’ing personally.

If you can do decent enough without headphones on VDJ and your comfortable with using the keyboard controls or mouse, then you may aswell go straight to the S2.

I know it’s contradicting what I said before, but after 2 years experience, you may aswell.

Fair enough, my bad haha
I do think all metal is a plus, however no sound card is somewhat difficult to justify. Being that the S2 is bundled with a sound card and traktor 2 pro. But do you have pictures of the midifighter??

Sorry it’s so small. I’m at work but found this in another thread. Orange and green, and I don’t even use it anymore. I have mapped what I wanted from it to the X1.

Go for the S2. Affordable and should do you for a good couple of years.

It has been interesting to follow how controllerism and devices that are being used/developed to make controllerism fun/exciting has been evolving.

Do you know what kind of DJing you want to do? Do you just want to be able to take tracks and just beatmatch and mix? If so, did you know you can do this without having to buy S2/S4, MC6000, or any of the abundant jog wheel mixers out there? (caveat..you have to know a bit of midi mapping) But you can take a Novation LaunchPad ($125USD) + decent mixer + software and emulate a dj controller.

Are you using digital media only? Do you have cd/records you want to mix? That will determine what type of gear you need to aim for.

I assume that being ‘new’ probably means you have a decent collection of mp3s somewhere…and you want to start learning to DJ with that collection.

My recommendation (and I’m not trying to insult you here) would be to grab yourself and inexpensive Numark DJ2go:
http://skratchworx.com/reviews/dj2go.php

Sure..it wont have loops and cues and FX; it doesnt have inputs or outs, but it does a decent job of midi djing. Combined with Serato/Traktor, you can easily learn the ins/outs of the software and provide you with a hunger for something bigger/better. At the same time, once you graduate from this, you have a backup gig device that you ALREADY know how to operate.

You are not going to break the bank on this and if DJing isn’t your thing in the end…you won’t be hurt financially. Starting here, this allows you to get more practicing under your belt, you get to do more research and understand what kind of DJ you want to become.

I started as a turntablist back in the early 90’s. I stopped for 10 years and I am now trying to figure out whats going on in the dj world. I love technology and I love the toys out there. So I bought myself Denon MC6000 to try to kick start my past love for djing. Wow…that thing has a lot of buttons. Wow…Traktor/VDJ has a ton of customization. It is a bit overwhelming.

Good luck with your choices and hope to hear about what you decided to do.

What you really want is a pair of belt driven Turntables, and old stanton mixer and a few hundred vinyl,

Come back and see us in 10 years

Thanks for the troll.

says the guy that spins on cdjs…
dudes looking for advice, he could go to a justin beiber video for trolls…

my reccomendation is go the S2 route, definately the best option out atm imo…

if i had done things over again, s2 definately would have been my choice, and you wont need more than that. if you do, (like i did) find yourself wanting extra controlls for things your missing, grab yourself one of those little portable keyboards with possibly some pads or knobs. oxygen 8 is a great idea of what im trying to describe.. plus it would give you knobs to use as filters that the s2 is missing (beware!)
bjust my .02

Thanks for the advice, I appreciate it man. The community here is very helpful, I figure if I need more knobs I can always upgrade.

Honestly, I’d figure a few things out. Looks like you’ve got a good idea, but some fleshing out of the plan never hurts.

What is your budget? That’s a big thing if we’re looking at what controllers/TT’s/CDJ’s to suggest.

You’ve chosen to go with Traktor, which is a stellar program. Are you sold on using a MIDI controller, or do you want to do timecode (CDJ/Vinyl) control in the future?

Something to think about is getting a controller that doesn’t have a soundcard (like the VCI-100SE for example here) and then going with the Audio 6 soundcard. That way in the future, if you wanted to upgrade your setup, you’d have a decent soundcard to use with Traktor Scratch Pro.

If you’re fine with just having a controller, then I think you’ll be pretty safe with the S2. It wouldn’t be my first choice in controllers, but that’s also my personal opinion. For two decks and control over the internal mixer, it’s a solid choice.

Personally I’d pony up for the S4 because you wouldn’t have to upgrade if you wanted to add timecode as opposed to the S2, but that again depends on budget and personal opinion.

My budget is $800, I figured that a good CDJ would run to much. I have played with a Vinyl for about 2 weeks, however I cannot see myself using Vinyls. (Mad props to anyone using them)

Money isn’t a huge issue, I honestly wouldn’t want to drop nearly an entire grand for the S4 however.

Could you elaborate on time codes??

Doesn’t anyone do any research before starting a hobby any more?

Judging by all your post you enjoy trolling. I asked a simple question, I am here to learn.
