Should i buy traktor kontrol s2 or go for something cheaper?
Hello, im trying to decide on what to choose. I’m thinking about either a s2 or something else, the s2 goes for about 400-500 euro. Is there any cheaper option that is worth checking out? I’m new to djing also. Was thinking like 300 euro maybe? Or is the s2 a better choice?
That one doesn’t have a buillt in sound card if im right? The s2 has no loop recorder and limited control over sample decks, now how important is these functions? I don’t really know which brand is the better one?
Maybe look into why you want to DJ, what you want to mix, and how you want to go about it before you spend your money on gear you may not need.
Play around with the demos of Traktor and VDJ, and mess around with mixxx as well (its free). See which one you like, and what parts of it you use, and then start researching controllers. There are lots of good companies, and lots of good controllers that do different things.
Read everything you can on this forum, and if you still have specific questions, I’m sure we will be here to answer them.
I have been messing around with like VDJ and traktor software and created several remixes and mashups for a long time. Mainly house music. Tested alot of things.
Creativity wise - none
Build/sound quality the s2 is much better
The S2 includes Traktor Pro
If you are a beginner IMHO you don’t need a whole lot of functionality, learn the basics first, phrasing, track selection etc .. unless you are some sort of prodigy this will take months if not years to learn at which stage you will know if DJ’ing is for you or not.
So Device selection is down to how much you want to invest in DJ’ing, do you see that you have a future in it or are you testing the waters to see if its really your “thang”.
Sample Decks Loop recorders and even effects IMHO should not even be touched upon until you get the basics down to a point where you can mix a stomper set in your sleep.
Well, i’ve also looked at Dennon dn-mc2000 and the dennon dn-mc3000, novation twitch, vci 100, and the s2. There is alot to chose from. I think that the dennon 3000 and s2 gives best sound quality but the dennon don’t come with traktor pro. Hard to decide.
Ok im trying to sort this out now. I will mainly be playing house. Im looking for a controller enough to play at parties when i get good enough. Which one would you chose and why?
Traktor s2 (600USD)
Novation Twitch (400-500USD)
Mixtrack pro (200-300USD)
RELOOP DIGITAL JOCKEY2 - INTERFACE EDITION (400-500USD)
Dennon dn-mc2000 (400-500USD)
Dennon dn-mc3000 (500USD)
DJ-CONTROLLER RELOOP TERMINAL MIX 2 (around 500USD)
Pioneer DDJ-ERGO (450-600USD)
If you need traktor pro consider that the S2 comes with it. Also the loop recorder (like on the S4) isn’t something most beginners use much. Also with the release of the remix decks, the sample deck controls dont quite work the same anyway.
I think the S2 is a solid all in one unit with tons of potential to learn, without a clutter of bells and whistles to distract you from the main goal - mixing. But honestly no one can tell you whats right for you. Go try them out, feel them up, smack em around. If you like it, buy it. The one thing I will tell you is if you have the cash flow, dont go cheap just to save money because you will probably hate yourself for it down the road. If this is a serious hobby buy serious equipment.
Im not telling you the S2 is the best choice by any means, but its the only one out of the bunch ive experienced so Im trying to shed some light on a mixer im familiar with. Good luck
If you’re going the S2, you can find it at much cheaper prices than 600. Even the DJTT store has it for 499, and thats with like 70 bucks of extras thrown on top. Keep an eye out as NI often have sales, I’ve seen it as low as 350
Dude … where do you get your prices wayyy exaggerated !
Here’s a tip .. there’s this little site called Amazon.com where you can get some good bargains
If you are in the EU check out Thomann.de for some good prices.
Pity you missed the black friday sales
Out of the list the s2 is the only one that comes with a decent pro software package and a pretty damn good sound card so that would be my choice (out of what you posted).
The MixTrack Pro Ive personally used and am completely satisfied with. It also has a built in soundcard. Perfect for beginners. Ive been using the Numark IDJ3 (a cheaper version of the Mixtrack Pro) for about 1 year now my controller was 160 dollars out of the store and it has lasted me and done me very well so far! It is plastic but unless you plan on dropping your equipment often or treating it like shit this shouldnt be an issue. IDC what anyone says u can make a 100 dollar controller as nice as you want. Theres a mapping feature that allows you to edit what/which buttons do. My numark is set up personally and is IMO a perfect set up! Until i ABOSLUTELY need a new controller i wont get one. Just maby a Z2 or a F1 to spice my set up up a little bit.
Spend about 200 - 350 on a controller you tested out and felt out. (prefered built in soundcard for easy plug n go access), and purchase an F1 for about 150 bucks (which comes with legit 2.5 traktor pro software) (and of course is one sexy piece of hardware) and do your thing thats 1 amazing quality item 1 good quality item and Legit software for the same price if not cheaper than the S2.
Not really.. The F1 actually serves a purpose because it is one of two controllers that can control traktors remix decks. It can also be mapped in midi mode, allowing it to serve 2 functions (which is why I like mine).
Im more curious about the Z2 “spicing up” the mixtrack.. personally I would choose one or the other.
As far as picking 3 of the controllers mentioned above - like I said earlier, I only have experience with the S2 so I can be much of a help. I know the S2 is nice (and like many have said, you can find for a lot cheaper that $600) but I would suggest trying them out for yourself
the Z2 would be more of a future investment that would continue being your mixer for a long long time later down the road would not really recommend the Z2 with a controller i just want one so when i upgrade from my controller to CDJ’s or Technics ill have a very solid mixer.
As far as the F1, You can litterally do anything you want with it i know i would map it out to have the faders and nobs and the buttons to be something else other than there presets. I havent had my hands on one yet so i dont know how the feel is but im sure i would use some of the faders to be efx faders!
