Have you ever been to Ibiza?
The only DJs that have lost residencies are the ones that are asking for too much money because their heads have grown too big.
Most of these are commercial DJs like the ones you mentioned who pull the crowds that usually know very little about the music and are there because they think Ibiza is the place to be.
The island is still full of BIG DJs. Look at the Ushuaia opening party and the Circoloco opening party and the Sankeys opening party and the We Love opening party and the Amnesia opening party. All big big names, particularly the Ushuaia opening. Just no cheese.
Pacha got rid of most of their residencies because they realised how ridiculous it had become. Pacha’s name was suffering because of it and their profits were too because of how much they were demanding. They got rid of a load of the shit (there’s still some left though) and now look like they’re going to have some decent parties this summer. Guy Gerber’s night and Insane Ibiza or whatever it’s called look to have some nice lineups planned.
The new club La Bomba looks to have a mix of more commercial stuff and underground on different nights to cater for everyone and if you read what the owner has to say about it it sounds like they have a good ethos.
They quit booking the superstar DJ’s because it’s pointless to book a DJ for $50k when you can run at capacity with a $10k DJ. It’s pissing money away. Check out their rosters in Ibiza this summer… arguably the best ever, even without the cheese tossers like Tiesto.
Like I said before… Vegas isn’t even close to being a destination for anyone outside of the midwestern US. You can book all the superstar DJ’s you want, but Vegas is still way behind Miami, Chicago, NYC and LA in terms of nightlife.
this gonna be great for Ibiza, definitely gonna cut down on all the stupid American rich kid hipsters there. Maybe soon i will make my pilgrimage there!
@squidot. If you get a chance, get out to Halfway to Halloween downtown tonight. Its in a warehouse where Industrial dead ends. Were you at Vanguard on a Monday. I used to run a house/DNB night there.
Dude. I dont even see the apocalypse ending Ibiza. In fact, Ive chosen it as my go to spot to be when the apocalypse does happen. I was homeless in Ibiza for two months and enjoyed life.
Yes, i’ve been to ibiza and not just once.
And while many people know what good music is, and realize those “big name” dj’s are nothing but commercial stunts, many people still swear by guetta and the such. Don’t ask me why, but there’s a reason why these guys always fill up stadiums. Because they have a name.
And even tho i know this is reeeeally far fetched, i still think there’s a small possibility for vegas to become the next ibiza. Call me crazy…
So you must realise Ibiza isn’t about those DJs? I’m amazed someone who has been thinks it couldn’t exist without them. What about all the clubs being full to the brim of people on the nights where non-commercial stuff is being played? If it means less of the kind of people who come for the West End as if it’s Zante or Malia then go and see the only ‘big’ DJs they’ve heard of, then it can only be a good thing. Or those who only go to sit on daybeds with their bottle of Grey Goose.
Vegas is nothing like Ibiza. I love Vegas, don’t get me wrong, but it’s not about music. It’s also a lot faker than Ibiza. It’s all about the bottle service crowd. Ibiza grew naturally and you still feel that today. Everything Vegas does, at least as far as the tourist industry goes, is forced.
Yeah, it definitely is more commercial, specially with all these bars like Ocean Beach Club opening up.

Of course it’s fake and it’s forced, and it sucks, and no, i really wouldn’t want vegas replacing ibiza anytime.I utterly love ibiza and its atmosphere.
I agree with everything you said above. But i didn’t say ibiza can’t exist without those dj’s.
Just think about how forced vegas was with casinos, why wouldn’t they try to do it again with music?
Yeah but you implied that those DJs are the only known ones on the island, when in reality the real scene is still thriving.
I’ve heard people say Ibiza isn’t the same as it used to be for different reasons, but when you look at what’s going on at the moment there’s nothing to complain about. From Steve Lawler and the Viva Warriors crew moving to Sankeys so they could play the music they want despite the pay cut, to the Enter nights, to DC10, to Cocoon and all the smaller stuff going on like Departure etc. Then you’ve got the new club, Bomba, bringing Circus to Ibiza and some other nights. And this on top of the other stuff I’ve already mentioned!
Vegas wasn’t forced with casinos, that was natural too. But these days the whole thing in general is quite forced. It’s an amazing place though, don’t get me wrong. You can’t complain at lots of people in one place having fun.
If anywhere is up and coming though, it’s Croatia. But that’s mostly festivals rather than day in day out, centralised partying.
I don’t see croatia getting bigger than it already is though ,since croatians don’t do anything to promote any kind of tourism, even tho they have amongst the most beautiful coasts on earth.
Ultra is cool and everything, but crime in split is a major problem for example..
