Tips on creating / Making a website for Free?

Hey, wondering if any one on here may be able to give some advice on the best way to go about setting up a website to promote myself as as DJ? / Pornstar  JK

I’m no web designer, so an easy to use web design software would be ideal.

Ideally what I want from the site:

Easy to edit, upload pics, vid’s & music.

Professional layout, be able to add a custom banner/logo.

So far I’ve been looking into free host and host domain names

The 2 I’ve found which suit my needs quite well so far are:

weebly.com for host/Stupidly easy but limited online design/unlimited bandwidth/add youtube vids - FREE (small weebly link at bottom of page).

Weebly really is pretty good for what it is (Free), but there are design limitations.

DOT.TK ‘Free!!’ domain name

Any one got any recommendations they’d like to share?

Thanks in advance

Why not just go with a well designed blogger, a free soundcloud account and a youtube account? Everything can be linked and embedded easily and with a little work can look very professional.

Mix cloud is very good too. Pretty sure its made by the same people that did sound cloud and in many ways is better than sound cloud.

Alot of professionals use word press as their web page too. Its a more professional version of blogspot or whatever. I know alot of graphic designers who use it to upload work, videos or whatever. Sounds like you need pretty much the same thing they need. You can download free blog templates to make your blog more personal as well.

And it’s very easy to whip up a banner in photoshop or whatever for your blog/webspace.

I know you want free, but if you had a friend who knows web design you can buy domains veeeeeeery cheap; like £20 for 2 years, including domain rental and server space.

Hey, thanks for advice.. Think I’ll go with the blogger

Wordpress works great very customizable

Google has a website for making websites called google sites, it allows you to have a home page, embed all sorts of stuff, picasa albums, etc. I think you can customize a lot of the backgrounds and everything too. It’s worth checking out.

My suggestion would be to make a nice design in photoshop, slice it and then export it to Dreamweaver. Its really the easiest method and you can customize it just the way you want instead of choosing from a specific template.

Here are two great tutorials for this

I’d recommend wordpress too, really easy to use…and free!
Here’s a simple one I did a few months ago, took me only about 10 minutes to understand how it works. http://oldskooltapes.wordpress.com/

(All links are now dead, was only to get an idea of how to use wordpress for a future site)

A good way now is as suggested, take full advantage of a good myspace, wordpress, youtube, soundcloud etc etc - then if you really want, make a simple yet well designed single page site to collect all of your links. No need to have a full on website nowadays, when there’s so many good free networking sites around

(btw, i’m currently working on this idea.. but havnt got around to making the single page site yet - all my linked web-spaces are below though…)

Another vote for Wordpress from me.

It’s easily updatable with no knowledge or web programming or HTML and can be totally customised as mentioned by others e.g. youtube vids, galleries, soundcloud etc

Here is something I made for my girlfriend to start promoting her DJing more using Wordpress and a cheap template and that only took a couple of hours to install/customise.

Total cost about £20 or less for the year.

Bargain!!

+1 for wordpress :stuck_out_tongue:

it’s perfect for just a single user, but can be easily expanded to have a whole team of bloggers under one roof. super customizable, and with a little coding knowledge you can make some bomb designs. plus there are thousands of themes out there you can tweak to your liking. here’s an example:

edit:

in order for wordpress to work, you need MySQL and PHP access. aka you can’t use most free hosting places. also if you want to be professional, it looks a lot better to get a dedicated host name. this stuff is hella cheap these days. if you buy a hosting package from most places they’ll throw in free domain registration.

I host my own website using a 200$ computer that sits on my desk. (makes a nice monitor stand) The domain name costs me 12$ a year, and I’ve nearly made that back from the google ad at the bottom of my mixes page. Its super easy to maintain, as it is nothing but very basic html with css for style, and I got to make my own banner and everything.

check it out: link in my signature

Loving that site, just about what I’m looking for!

Will look into this now  Thanks for the heads up all

this…

the blog format is popular because it makes sense. the artblog in my sig is just a wordpress blog that i bought a domain name for and set a custom header

wordpress all the way! i would buy a domain though and download the proper version rather than use the free blog thing.

the free blog is… free which is good but i found it less customisable that the full wp thing.

If you go through bluehost there’s a 1 click wordpress install option too. which is mega helpfull
