Top 100 DJs ever ...

Top 100 DJs ever …

Was out last night nattering to a mate, and we got onto this one - Who would be in your list of the top 100 DJs of all time.

The only rule we could think of was that the nominees had to be DJ’s not producers (so no Deadmau5/Prince Paul/Dan The Automator, as they produce but don’t really DJ, but J Dilla is allowed as he used to DJ live for Slum Village)

Yes I know it’ll be a subjective list, but I’m interested non the less …

Off the top of my head some of the names from last night were (bearing in mind he and I are primarily into Hip-Hop

Grandmaster Flash
Kid Koala
Terminator X
Young Einstein
Larry Levan
Madlib
Grand Wizzard Theodore
DJ Kentaro
DJ Q-Bert
DJ Format
Cut Chemist
DJ Babu
Jonathan More & Matt Black (Coldcut)
Grand Mixer DST
Shiftee Mixmaster Mike
DJ Yoda
DJ Krush
Jam Master Jay
DJ Yella
DJ Cam
J Dilla
Jimmy Saville (first person to use two decks at the same time apparently … :eek:slight_smile:
Greg Wilson (first person to mix on UK TV, on Blue Peter)
DJ Kool Herc
Afrika Bambaataa
Frankie Knuckles
Roc Raida
A-Trak (youngest ever winner of the DMC)
Mr Thing
Rob Swift
DJ Dexter
DJ Quest
Z-Trip
Peanut Butter Wolf
DJ MK
Keb Darge

What do you reckon?

Good list. I was going to add a few, but they were there

Todd Terje
Steve Hurley
Andre Harris
David Mancuso

Jimmy Saville

He’s already on the list, try again.

I’ll add Carl Cox

I’ve just realised I missed of Jazzy Jeff … oops

It’s fairly obvious what my musical tastes are looking at my list isn’t it …)

As you said SO - subjective. Taking out the producer changes things somewhat. Need to ponder…

BTW - both Cox and Hurley produce.

Craze

I think there’s DJ’s that primarily produce and Dj’s that primarily DJ, Cox really does blur the lines in though. He’s a good DJ and also a good producer.

No problem with production, as long as they’re DJs as well - and by DJ I mean more than just hitting play on their latest tune …

Oh and further additions (that I’m embarassed I missed tbf)

John Peel
Mr Scruff

Aaaaaaaaaargh - was about to post Peel!

I would add (in no particular order):
Mr. C (wonder if he still plays  )
Howie B
DJ Shadow (if that counts, as his live DJ sets usually have MPCs)
Stanton Warriors
2 Many DJs
Satoshi Tomiie
Norman Cook

Thought Shadow was in there tbh - but yes definitely.

Norman Cook, I’ve never seen and know him more as a producer, but to be fair, he fulfils the rules …

If we’re including the Stantons, you’ve got to put the Plump DJs in there as well really haven’t you …

i know your more into hip hop and that a few guys have said already,
but how could ya not have Carl Cox on the list
yeah he produces, but he was DJing way before he ever was Producing, that guy must be at it over 40 years now. and before he started proucding properly he was and still is LEGEND.
also one of the worlds highest paid DJs too and rightly so,

and on the millenium near years eve 1999 he was by far the histest paid and flew around the world bringing in not 1 not 2 but 3 near years eves…
that in its self is LEGEND

anyways as you can tell. I LOVE CARL COX… i wanna have his babys

Terry Wogan (had more listeners than any UK DJ every)

He should be included just for the Floral Dance …

i know its very early in the life of digital djs and i dont know if he packs out clubs or international venues etc but in time, im sure our man Ean will be on a list like that. just for contributing so much to the digital scene

Can’t believe I missed Scruff.

just trowing out a few off the top off my head that would be on my list…

Judge Jules
Sasha
John Digweed
Richie Hawtin
Erick Morillo
Paul Oakenfold
Roger Sanchez
Pete Tong
laurent garnier
seb fontaine
Tony De Vit (RIP)
Jazzy Jeff

just a few off the top of my head for consideration/debate.
