Alright fellas, great site you got going here. As the title suggests im basically a total beginner to the dj side of music. Ive been making eletronic music for a bout 3 years now using cubase and reason with my oxygen8v2 and using my toneport ux2 as the sound card but im now really interested in making mixes and playing parties and whatnot.
Ive just started messing round with traktor pro but i dont really though what im doing. So basically i was wondering if people could point me in the direction of how to get started? whats a decent mixer to get? How could i encoorperate my oxygen into things? Just anything you think i should know.
Probably the quickest way to get you started would be to get a VCI-100 because there is just so much information around this site that will help you get off the ground faster than you would if you bought anything else.
Nope i dont think so - there are some cheap ones out there but they arnt that crash hot. Everyones just tries to impersonate the VCI-100 and usually fails epicly, the funny thing is it wouldnt be that hard to make something better than the VCI, its just that their r&d teams leave something to be desired.
na i thought there was a ripoff lookin mixer about the same time i decided to buy a vci. was considering it as an option. no idea what it was now tho, must have been a year ago almost exactly
im only really looking to spend £200 tops for now, i dont wanna commit until i know i will enjoy it and the like. I dnt think i could justify spending more atm..i am a cheap student after all.
I would say, save the cash, and get a vci, if you really need a control for the time being get M-Audio X-Session. Being that they go for $69 - $99 USD.
It sounds as though riley only wants to muck around in the bedroom to see if it really catches his fancy. I don’t really see anything wrong in picking something like a BCD up that you can probably get for just over $100 USD (estimate) to try his luck on. At least them he will have a form of jogs.
If not maybe he could try and pick up a pad controller (Trigger Finger/padKONTROL/MPD) off ebay. They can be found for pretty cheap over here (aus). I just see the x-session as pretty limited
yeah you spot on there mate. Im not looking for anything totally pro, i just want it as a bedroom hobby then if i decide to take it further then i could upgrade.
If i played a few house parties with my mates who dont dj, you reckon a BCD could cut it?
IMO the Novation Nocturn is worth considering - it’s far from perfect, and the x-fader isn’t made for rapid cuts.. but what it also doubles as is a very versatile controller for audio production - you can easily setup templates for VSTs/programs and it will auto-swap to them when you select that VST/prog.
Some people don’t like them, but i’ve not had any problems with mine at all… the endless rotaries are easily accurate enough for messing around. I take mine along to a mates house if i’m likely to just be part-time mixing, otherwise I use my VCI-100.
I recommend this because it will be just as much use for your music production as DJing… It’s cheap as well
You’d be able to do a lot with one of these and your Oxygen working together, the VCI-100 is a great piece of kit though - well worth saving for.
cheers for the help guys. Ive been into my local shop today and asked a few questions. The guy said that the vci 100 has stopped being stocked in the uk at the moment but he showed me the numark omni and stealth control. The same controller just the omni has a built in soundcard. I already have a line 6 toneport ux2 though so i dont need the soundcard right? that would be good enough?
Does anyone have any opinions on the stealth then?
Also from here what else do i need? I have a decent set of headphones, do i need monitors? At the moment all i use is some decent PC speakers.
