Traktor Pro 2 with Ableton

Traktor Pro 2 with Ableton

I do have 2 question that I was not able to find elsewhere.

  1. If I were to sync Traktor Pro 2 and Ableton Live 9 would I be able to use Traktor internal mixer mode or must I use Traktor in external mixer mode?

2.I am planning to use loops, midi messages and effects on Ableton while Traktor would run full tracks. To run effects in Ableton I have to route audio from Traktor to Ableton in-addition to syncing? Correct me if I am wrong on this one.

Thank you very much in advance for the help..

Hello and welcome to the forum.

First essential question here is are you on a mac or on a pc…because if you’re on a pc (ie windows 7), you won’t get a stable midi clock, it will fluctuate rending any centered rhythmic effects (ie, beatmasher, beatrepeater and the likes) unusable (really not satisfactory). You’ll get difficulties getting all tight together.

As for the rest , what’s your hardware if you want a more precise answer?

1/ both are possible but internal mixing presents some limitations
2/ yes of course if you mean effects on traktor’s tracks.

Meanwhile, here 's some documentation:

You could use innerclock if you have some cash ^^

Depending on your needs, an alternative to all this could be to use Deckadance 2 (as it comes also as a vst for ableton), if you’re not strictly attached to traktor (not that deckadance is at the same level as traktor but it’s still a very valid option if you’re more an ableton user rather than a traktor one).

Good luck.

Thank you for help. I am on PC. I will take a look at Deck Dance 2.

I will like to play my full tracks and add on effects, loops on top of it on Ableton. My tracks are traditional music with electronic, it will be a nightmare to warp. I tried warping 50 tracks, however I feel I am losing out that feeling (Ableton too rigid).

Note: deckadance latest update has been released and it includes a “deckadance mini” vst which is a single deck so you can have one “dj” deck per ableton’s audio channel, that’s very interesting.

That’s a fucking understatement, mate!!!

I’ll be back…

Yikes!!! That would be perfect. Running a track and playing loops above it in Ableton. A dream setup (Check out KiNk). How’s the stability of deckadance? It would be shame if it crash mid-set, hence I did not want to route audio from Traktor to Ableton via jackaudio. Btw, I am running on a windows laptop :relaxed:

“Deckadance mini” is blowing my mind, folks…

Woooo!!!

Guys thanks to this topic I will probably completely change my way of playing! Awesome!

What do you guys use to control all this!?!?

Extremely interesting…
A game changer if it works. I’d be more concerned about the stability issues.
It seems to be what “The Bridge” was SUPPOSED to be.

Free trial = worth checking out.

If Deckadance Mini can give me multiple midi controllable cue points (missing from Ableton), DVS control (missing from Ableton) and some kind of detailed browser (missing from Ableton) I’ll be over joyed.

From a quick look - it like like it DOES offer all of these things… I wish I had more time to investigate. :disappointed:

So for your traktor comment, you’re back to square one, wanting to route audio from traktor to ableton is one thing (involving latency, and jack for windows is a ugly thing to set up and not user friendly) but you will get a midi clock that will drift seriously. It’s a bit better if traktor is the slave but it still drifts. And I’m not even mentioning tempo changes here…
It’s like that, it’s not something you can overcome.
“This is caused by different mechanism for MIDI message transport that those operating systems provide. The implementation in OS X delivers better results and a more stable BPM value.”

One work around is to “tell” both programs what is the tempo you want to be and ‘beatmatch’ the two of them (launching your first track and ableton’s play counter and ‘beatmatching’ a bit the two of them if needs be). So either a knob/fader/buttons controlling both, with the same ‘settings/paramaters/range’ that would be applied to both of them, if that makes sense, to define the tempo and tempo changes.

Still wanting to use ableton and traktor? get a Mac*
I don’t have one myself so it’s not a biased comment.

But I’m not that literate with ableton so all this is a lot of noobish comments. May be insight from others would be interesting to hear.

It’s not an ableton/traktor specific issue as said above: some of the vst products offer a stand alone version. Like most Sugarbytes ones (Wow filter and Turnado springs to mind as good examples: great - ie fucking great - programs) so you can use them without the need of a DAW. But you’ll fall back to the same issues of midi clock drifting. So Turnado offers amplifiers type effects that you can use, some of the filters are fine but you cant’ use the slicers, most of the delay samewise because those are so much linked to the beatphase/because of the drifting tempo.
Same with Wow (amazing filter vst), most of the functions are ok but as soon as you want to experiment with some of the envelopes, beat sequencing, it falls short.

Yes, not sure about dvs but I would assume so. The midi control bothers me a bit. It has a controller ‘manager’ with a learn function but, if you want to use shift layers and led feedback for your controller you need to be able to write midi scripts (why the hell did they choose this path??? not very user friendly if you ask me).
