As some people know here I am trying to get back into DJing, being largely absent for 12+ years other than some occasional laptop mixes.
I have been seeing some S4’s at some descent prices as of late, and am curious if mixing on 4 decks is worth the additional cost or if I should just invest in the newer S2. Are there any advantages to the S4 or S2 that would put either over the top?
That’s really a question that you need to answer for yourself. If you’re going to use 4 decks and will feel limited by 2, then its worth it. If you’re going to use 2 decks and never think about 4, then it isn’t.
Really tough question since this will be my first foray into digital decks. Before this was some old school Denon CD decks, before that SL1200’s, and all of that was in 2 deck configurations. I could see the power of 4 decks, but just not sure if I would be as capable as I used to be with 2.
That being said, are there other controls that I lose or gain if I go with the S2 over the S4?
Dedicated channel filters, only 4 hotcue buttons per side (the s4’s sample buttons can be reassigned to hotcues 5-8), master VU meters, timecode capable soundcard (if you ever feel like attaching a pair of TTs or CD players to it), loop size and general displays (the ones above each deck) and loop recorder controls.
The advantages on the S2 would be it’s a a little smaller and it has booth independent volume.
