Visuals, Videos, Real-life events… What inspires you?
A lot of the songs I play are represenations of parts of my life that I went through or that I wish to go through.
I’m not gonna lie I love visuals as well. Does anyone else use any? If so, was just wondering which visualizations from what programs you vibe to the most. iTunes 8 has some pretty sick stuff. My Xbox360 has some pretty cool stuff too. I tend to leave it on the visualizer once in a while.
Post any videos/visuals that make you feel inspiration to mix some good songs; let’s get some cool stuff in here.
I’m currently working on some flassh software to do something very similar except it will be linked up with my Midi controllers so effects/triggers on my controller effect the visuals :]

I still personally prefer on the fly CG stuff personally as it can be manipulated a heap more, but its also alot harder to do and consumes much much more CPU. So much CPU that currently you need a dedicated system to do the cool stuff
Does anyone know of any visualizers that work for traktor or will accept a generic audio stream maybe through jack or something? Could I run traktor through winamp or a similar program with visualizers, and if so without bad latency?
i like trippin out and starin at these pre-programmed visualisers on itunes and xbox etc as much as the next guy, but i think any VJ would blow chunks if he saw them being used at a show/gig. we had our first VJ the other night and he used 4 vcrs (oldskool) with footage of trippy shit and mixed them all together as one mixes 4 decks together, plus a whole heap of trippy effects. importantly, he wasnt using any program with trippy light shows, it was all sampled images of meaningful stuff super-imposed over each other.
i guess what im sayin is that using an itunes or xbox visualiser is like the DJ at an art gallery just putting on a random noise generator

I tend to agree that computer generated visuals are not ideal, but you can use the generated visuals to mix them with other images as well. I have used some pc generated visuals in the past for some gigs. Specially when they want more for less.
For this use I would recommen Ryan Geyss´ “Milkdrop” software. This man worked for Nvidia so he knows what he is talking about.
Milkdrop is free and it can be downloaded as a screen saver or as a plugin for some music softwares. The new version of winamp has milkdrop included, as a visualizer plugin.
If you use it I would recommend taking a look at the manual because it will tell you how to customize the software, enabling you to program transition length or presets for the visuals. You can rate each diferent visualization and also you can edit custom text messages for the screen (cool for some branding with your dj name or for some messegaes for the corwd). Another cool future is that it enables you to handle the visuals on a second monitor and have a vj console on the fisrt one so you can enter commands or view the software messages.
This is an option to start with vjing and if you want to run a cool lightshow at home while listening to your mix.
And I forgot, you can assing winamp to get sound from a line input so you can generate the visuals during your live set. In order to do so you have to go to winamp and select “open url” and select :Linein (will confirm this info cause I don´t remember the command by hard but it is on the manual also).

but to answer your question about inspiration. when it comes to any of my creative processes, I draw from any/all things that spark my memory, curiousity, emotion and imagination. From early childhood fixations like cartoons to brand new discoveries I made the other week, it all serves a purpose for my art projects.
