“Well aged” DJs. Represent.

Being 37, I am curious how many DJ’s are on the forum that were around before CD’s graced the booth, let alone mp3’s, laptops, and software. So any old school turntableists, or other DJs that were 18 and the Golden Age of Hip Hop was still in it’s prime?

Not sure about the forum, but one of my favourite dj’s, Mr. Oizo is 36 atm.
Just a fun fact of something. :stuck_out_tongue:

im 27 this year, started building up my vinyl collection 10 years ago when i was 17
my vinyl collection stops at around 1000 pieces, since then i just buy music online because it was starting to get really difficult to buy records (now im in singapore)

I’m only 21 (soon to be 22) But have a large vinyl collection and had Technics before CD’s were even thought about being used in clubs and been DJ’n since i was just a kid.

37 here as well.

there’s quite a few people on the forum in their 30’s. a couple in their 40’s i believe.

32…started on vinyl and shitty decks!

Back when just getting em beatmatched was a MAJOR thing!

31 (though I only started playing 3 years ago, so I probably don’t count …)

40

33 here…but started djing in the late 90s, and started w/ CDs…later added vinyl and, in the last year, moved into the digital djing realm…

…same here…when i started, just getting the tracks matched was half the fun or more…and, i remember how much i was amazed when sick djs would have multiple tracks going, acapellas, etc., all by ear. still pretty sick. different time now, with incredible new possibilities, but i’ll always think that a dj who can beatmatch is money.

and I still carry cd back-ups!

33 Soon to be 34 :disappointed: started with really cheap shitty twin cd tray things, moved too cdj800’s then 1000’s now im all digital baby with my S4  oh and i also have some old belt driven numarks i bought to try vinyl, and i like it just the turntables are shite lol

Turning 39 this year. Started off in the early 90s with a crap Realistic mixer (remember Radio Shack?), and an even crappier belt drive turntable.

Fun!

ps Am I really in the lead for Oldiest Fogie here?

36, started about '93 with a couple of dodgy soundlab decks. Took a break for a few years and got back into it with Traktor.

Kinda miss the vinyl though

36 soon to be 37

I started in 1990 with a set of belt drive decks then moved onto Technics 2010 after a few years… Retired from DJing in 2002 after getting disillusioned with the scene.. But came out of retirement in 2009 to help a ex DJ colleague run a Internet Radio station.

In that eight year gap i didn’t keep up to speed with developments in technology and turned my back on the DJ community.. So coming back without any experience of CDJ’s or Traktor, Serato etc… was a bit overwhelming to start with

But within the last 12 months i have mastered CDJ’s, Serato & Traktor and back playing out live again.. And i love it more than ever! Having the choice is amazing. Don’t get me wrong i miss the Vinyl days of going down to the shop on a Thursday and buying about 6-8 records and playing them for the first time on your 1210’s

But technology has given me a choice… I’m just so glad that never sold my records… (Much to the wife’s annoyance!) But having 8000 records is like having my own record store in my Attic.

Its amazing being a DJ now… And you still cant beet the sound of vinyl.. The warmth the crackles.. Mmmm

I’m 31 this Thursday and started collecting vinyl when I was about 15. Had a set of crappy belt drives but got a decent deal on a used set of 1210’s and haven’t looked back.

Can’t remember the last 12 i bought but now getting back in the game with traktor. New denon DN-SC2000 incoming ASAP after my birthday. Can’t wait!!

Nope..that award goes to JoJo!

We have a guy here in CT who is a Psytrance party freak. Goes to EVERY party…and we have many!
He is 54…and has been DJing for the last couple years. He is getting gigs now and everything!

Always wears this whacky hat…and calls himself The MadHatter!

Nope there’s someone older than me. I’m sure he’ll find his way in here soon enough.

I am 49…

Have flirted with DJing pretty much all my life (first used a reel to reel tape recorder at the age of 11 to play to kids at school!) but never really got in to it until recently. Now, I regularly play at a party at a private club and would love to play to an audience more often. Just started recording some mixes, I have to admit there is a heavy Ean Golden influence in my latest…

Count me into the geriatric crowd. I’m 41.

28.. started spinning in about 01-02. taught myself how to play on a mates setup playing hard house, hard trance. EDIT: on a pair of 1200’s and a djm600

So that’s two more experienced than me, but the most experienced has yet to post.
