While some of you can live the glamorous life of being a DJ and get the bills paid, some of us need to get up early and do the crappy stuff to make our employers richer. This makes me think about some stuff…
If you are doing gigs, how do you manage to get up early? You could maybe be caffeinated during work hours but this cant be done for too long. Specially if you sometimes have to work at home.
Djing is not a cheap “hobby”. I have seen the “Show us your setup” post and I have seen a lot of pricey stuff with multiple computers and gadgets, dedicated rooms and what not. You must be rollin’ in the dough!
With DJing and computers going hand in hand I think maybe most of you with a day job should have something computer related. IT manager, Db administrator, Linux demigod etc…
Me?
IT System Admin. DJ practice/new music hunt is moderately compromised by extra workload I need to finish at home besides home/family duties. I wish I could take my VCI100/MPD32 to work but I managed to install a demo version of Traktor and Ableton very hidden on my work computer. Although the pay is good is not that I cant buy more equipment but that I would not have the time to learn and configure properly more gadgetry.
I’m the Director of Audio Visual at a hotel here in the Bay Area. The pay is decent… enough to pay the bills, but more importantly, it allows for a lot of free time to work on DJ’ing and producing.
This is fairly new though, up untill about 3 months ago, I was only a tech, slaving away 50+ hours of the week for much less pay
Wow! Just realized we have very similar lives. I too have a VCi-100 and MPD32, as well as Traktor and Reason installed at work
Aerospace systems engineer, finishing certification on our first fly-by-wire primary flight control. I specialize in hydro.mechanical but am doing more and more hw/sw integration…
Paperwork job, but I get to play at our supplier’s test rig sometime (they let me “play” in 16 hr shifts if I’m not careful). Pay is good, but it HAS to be.
Phil.
P.S. As of May 1, I’m taking 7 months off. I said the pay was good, didn’t I?
OK, am I the only non-engineer in here… I’m going to school for political science and communications, but it seems you are all like hardcore math lovers. Hell I literally don’t have a single math related course in my curriculum haha
I work for a boutique production company in the Napa Valley. I construct custom stages, work as a sound engineer, lighting tech, and do special event management. I also get to DJ/VJ many of the events that I work at, which is actually where I got my start as a DJ. On the side I design and install PC-based home entertainment systems for the rich old guys that I meet at these events.
Electronics Technician in the US Navy for 8 years with 6 months till I’m out, then going to UNR to get a degree in Electrical Engineering. Pay is decent in the navy, but the time away isn’t worth it and doesn’t really help you get any steady gigs. Can’t wait to start college though, going to be completely different than it is now.
I’m a Producer / Director. I used to freelance in TV in the UK, worked on I’m a Celebrity, Dog Borstal, Big Brother (I was a VT producer - basically i produced the Best Bits Sequences when house mates got booted out) and a bunch of others.
I set up an online video production, Airbubble Media, cause online video is blowing up massively.
The website is under construction but there’s a link to my Vimeo Channel
I m only manager in a god damn subway!
Never left after I finshed uni cause I used to
able to flex my time to do other things money is not great but
I scrimp and save to get what I need. Still have absolutly no direction
As to as career.
team leader in a curry factory, pay isn’t brilliant but is respectable enough. work 12.5 hours 4 on 4 off, so get plenty of free time, but when i work i have no time. not computer related in any way, just run a line and change parts of the machines for different sized pots etc…
used to run the CIP system there, that used a computer, and basically controlled the heart of the factory - 4 sauce kettles, 2 transfer ‘buffer tanks’, 3 cooling plants and 11 holding tanks, plus transferring the sauce to the lines. i’d say 70% of the ‘high risk filling’ area was occupied by my equipment, the 4 kettles were on other side of wall though.
have a modest set-up compared to alot here, and all paid for with finance - i suck at saving
Writing lighting tools for PDI/Dreamworks, hardcore graphics and math geek (Go see “How To Train Your Dragon”, cos your attendance converts to my bonus).
@djmaxone - got anything for an old popbitch ed?
@jakeintox - I’d love to pick your brains on club video and lighting on the cheap.
I work in canary wharf as a Bond Broker, been doing this job on an off for 23 years! not much else to say is it pays the bills and it’s never been my first choice of profession but heyho needs must and all that bollocks…
