Which audio interface to choose?

Which audio interface to choose?

Hi,

I’m about to buy an audio interface
, But what do i have to look for with my setup.
I will buy it on this site (sorry it is in Dutch, you can translate in your preferred Language)

You’ll see several filter options but what to choose? Digital/ analog, input/output, how many…

This is my setup

  • traktor 4 decks
  • 2 xone k2
  • xone 92
  • ableton push 2

Thnx!!!
Sanny

If you dont need more than 2 channels, go for the focusrite, or buy and audio2 from our shop .
also, your k2’s have audio interfaces in them, plus you can link them for 2 channels output.

Hi, thnx for replying.

Currently I’m using the 2 k2 as audio interface, but I’m not so happy with the quality.

I just started with ableton push and I’m searching to connect it to my xone 92.
With a good external audio Interface i think it can work.

Can somebody advice me?
What audio interface do I need with my setup?

  • xone 92
  • 2 xone k2
  • ableton push

How many digital in- and outputs?
How many analog in- and outputs?
Other things to look for?

Thnx for your help

Audio 10

Thnx happydan,

But can you explain why?
There is so little to find on the web around this topic.

If i get it right.
There is a USB from my k2 and a USB from my push going to my computer.

From my computer there is 1 USB going to the audio interface

From the audio interface there are 5 analog stereo outputs going to my mixer? 4 traktor decks and 1 push

But then…
I have 4 channels (traktor) that I can connect to my mixer, but where do I put my push?
Thinking that I want to use the send and return effects.
Via ableton or guitar pedals.
Guitar pedals I know how to do it.
Send and returns through ableton I don’t.

Explaining this would be very helpful!

Thnx!
Sanny

The Audio 10 has five stereo outputs. You can have four Traktor decks and the push on the fifth. The Xone:92 has six channels available to use. I’d put the Push on one of the AUX channels on the left.

EDIT: You could even run the Traktor deck audio out of the 92 into the Ableton channel as S/R if you wanted to use it for effects or sampling.

OK we are getting somewhere

i was looking at some video’s and a noticed that in the video of how i play with chris liebing the setup is almost the same.
At 5:45 min in the video he starts explaining the S&R he has.

As you explained put the push on the left aux (that’s easy), but how do i send the S&R of the xone 92 to ableton?

Chris uses the right aux channel, do i get it right that my audio interface needs 2 extra analog in- and outputs?

meaning that my audio interface needs a support of:

  • 1 usb input: coming from my computer (traktor and ableton)

  • 4 analog outputs go to the 4 channels on my mixer (traktor decks)

  • 1 analog output goes to the left aux channel (push as a drum machine)

  • 2 analog input coming from the send & return channel of my xone 92 (both mapped to a channel in ableton)

  • 1 analog output going to the right aux channel (ableton S&R channels)

or is there an easier way to send & return ?

Your setup is much closer to Richie Hawtin’s, but he uses a $3k audio interface.

You don’t need to use both S/R outputs from the 92, but you could route one to any of the spare inputs on the Audio 10 into Ableton, but route that out to the same AUX channel as the Push. It’s not as good as having a 12 channel soundcard, but how much control of effects do you really need? You could just disable Ableton’s effects on the push.

Ask yourself, though… do you need S/R with Traktor’s effects? I’d say probably not.

Yes I do  I think a S&R effect is more dynamic.

I was looking at the RME Fireface UC.
Would I be able to have separate s&r with this interface?

Thnx!

Doesn’t look like it. I think it’s only got four stereo outs.

So if I get it right. Not each nr on the back is a channel?
Then you need 2 numbers for 1 channel?
Fe output nr 1 & 2 = left & right of deck 1 traktor en goes to channel 1 on the mixer?

Here is a video:

Man this is complicated material to understand. Thank you for your support!

Kr,
Sanny

Hey Sanny,

each number is a mono channel, for stereo you will need 2  Rme is a very good choice, excelent quality and very low latency, a lot of techno dj’s use RME, so for your case you will need 12 out and 2 in

4 stereo channels tractor (8)
1 stereo for ableton (2)
1 stereo return (2)
s stereo input for your aux send (2)

you can also look at motu for example..The Motu Ultralite mk3 Hybrid USB en FireWire audio interface for example its a lot friendlier for your wallet

Thnx for this suggestion. I’m looking into the motu and I only see 8 outs on the back, can you guide me in finding the other 4 outs?

Hey Dan,

I looked into the audio10 but I see only 4 outs on the back, where do I output my push signal?

Thnx!!!

one on the front mate

On a budget I recommend the ESI Gigaport HD+ to get 4 channels out of traktor into a 4 channel mixer.

Then for send and return via ableton you could use the ESI MAYA 44. The MAYA would give you two stereo inputs and outputs to and from ableton.

Of course there are much better interfaces out there and it totally depends on what you want to spend. I personally would use the above as they are cheap but still good enough quality that people won’t know you’re using budget hardware.

Audio 6 from Native Instruments

I have watched the video with Chris L and it’s right that he uses the fireface UC but that is only to get the audio out of traktor. He has a second laptop running ableton which must have it’s own interface that isn’t mentioned in the video.
