so im spinning at this cocktail night on saturday, and the promoter told me, that there will be people from the age of 18-58.
so here is my question: how do i satisfy such a large variety of different musical tastes?
was going for jazz/classical dancing music (tango/chachacha/rumba w/e) and some oldies (queen, supertramp, elo…)
also will try to work some newer (pop-like) stuff into the set, to cater the younger ones.
I’ve also been told, that people start dancing or at least want to dance, so sooner or later the sit-in part will die.
any general suggstions? i’m really scared of that gig by the way (press involved etc.)
you’re going to probably take a lot of requests, so have your bases covered as far as popular music (new and classics) are concerned. this is a good opportunity to broaden your musical horizons, so put a lot of time into getting a diverse collection. other than that, just go with the flow. it helps me to get a request on gigs like this so i can see what people dig, don’t dig, etc. don’t stress it too much, just do what you do, as best you can. that’s all they can really ask for in the end.
you can never go wrong with motown, older generations love it and if the younger kids ask any questions just tell them this,
“these are the records that hip hop is made from, all the sampling you ever heard came from motown, so I like to do a throwback thing and play the originals”
I’ve actually turned some 12-16 old kids onto motown bigtime that way.
If you can get ahold of the Sampled series of CDs there’s loads of good tracks on there
There’s been about 4 releases.
Every track has been sampled by a current well known song. Most are great tunes in their own right but when the sample comes in the younguns will know!
wohooo so much creativity spreading allover this thread.
dug out some old vinyls of my parent’s yersterday to get some good old groove going… turntable didn’t work any longer → disassembled the whole thing, and pu some lubricator EVERYWHERE
and whoop, working fine again. gonna give me some happy hours at home… great!
