will it mix?

will it mix?

time and time again i scroll through my track library and play list and ask my self would this track (of different mood and genre) mix with this track (of different mood and genre). while some people would say “of course, if you’re skilled enough!”. The thing is i’m still new and I’m certainly not Terrence Parker.

This thread is for people to express their curiosity and spurn on experimentation.

But will the mix flow?

Will it hustle and flow?

More to the Point: “Will it blend ?”

is “blend” different than “mix”?

Depends on how oldschool you wanna go. :-p (Mixing meaning to remix live and blending meaning to play tracks).

That aside…

Just experient… constantly. Never medling

Actually if its blending I tend to think more about long continuous well layered long mixes the likes of Digweed…

But I was getting off topic and thought someone would have got the reference to this

… oh well, epic fail.

lmao. Totally forgot about that guy

There are several things to consider when that thought goes through your head:

  • Genre
  • Key (not essential, depending on genre)
  • BPM
  • Structure of the tracks
  • Location of vocals and other samples

The main thing is to avoid clashes like the plague (unless they work, ie vocals as a duet). Eve BPM can be played with. For example, I like playing Newcleus - Automan with Snap - Rhythm is a Dancer, by looping the end of Automan, raising the tempo and bringing in Snap.

The only thing to do is experiment. Tis question is a subset of the “know your tracks” mantra. That requires you experimenting when you practice.

I don’t know man, I’m pretty old school. “mixing” for me was anything that had to do with a mixer.

(Totally not being combative…just my frame of reference)

Maybe some of the younger peeps can update us on the DJ lingo…

I’m over 45 and it’s always been mixing to me. Blending “might” be relevant to just crossfading between tracks but any use of eq, line fader and effects= mixing, as far as I’m concerned.

old man… (I’ll be 44 on thursday)

37, here. Blending, to me, is long, technical mixes between tracks. I do a lot of it with techno and progressive house.

39, here. To me, blending is taking two songs and making them sound like one. Mixing is transitioning from one track to another while in the beats are synced.
