Working out melodies [EDM]

Just had a question.
How do you guys workout a melody and find the right sound for it?

Once I’ve got a bassline and a drum pattern, or perhaps a chord progression and a drum pattern, I just jam along on either my push or keyboard controller. From there I modify notes here or there or velocities, note lengths, etc. Seems to work best for me just jamming along in the key that the bassline/chord progression is in.
I either play something out on my keyboard and then edit it, or I just use the mouse and click one in manually. Depends on how I’m feeling.
Improv… I just mess about in ableton, either using a piano roll or a real instrument and just write until i come up with the right melody. granted i work with trance and its mostly in the chords
What people above have said, come up with a beat and then a basic bassline, then play with the keyboard for a bit. I’ll also go back and change the bassline to suit any melodies I do come up with.
