Yamaha HS7, Adam F7 or recommend me another monitor for dj purpose!

Hi there,

Since I’m less then half a meter away from my hifi speakers (and don’t have more room to position them properly) my ears are blown away and I think that monitor speakers (near field) will sound way better.

So my question, which monitor would you advise (2-300 per speaker max!)?

Also I am able to strecth my budget a bit by only purchasing one monitor and purchase a second later on, Would using just one monitor sound ok/good if I play stereo files thru them? Or will that result in a strange sound?

I’m not planning on a sub since the room I practice in is fairly small and I guess a sub will sound real muddy.

Thanks in advance!

you wouldnt get stereo from a single monitor, i can say that the hs7 is a lovely monitor and that the adams a7x are nice not sure how the F7 sounds

I understand that you don’t get a stereo image from one speaker, but would that mean I miss half the music?

The AX7 is really expensive, someone know the diffrence with the F7 and if it’s wordth the $$$?

Oh and my main genre would be Techno, Drumcode mainly (altough not all Drumcode would classify as techno :stuck_out_tongue:).

you wouldnt loose any of the music unless you left the output as stereo and had stuff panned over to the opposite side but within most software to my knowledge it has a mono output setting but id always try to get a stereo pair over one singular monitor

I’m not using software

Allen&Heath 42 with CDJ1000’s

How about a pair of m-audios? The hs7 are pretty harsh in longterm sessions.

JBL LSR305, or LSR308

They are Awesome, you can usually find them around the same price as RPK’s, and they sound way better.

I still stand behind my BX5’s… They really pack a punch and sound a lot more full than the Yamaha monitors which to me sound very flat. Adams top both though from my experience.

You do not want monitors like the ones you mentioned for DJing. Those are for producing. They are made to be flat sounding. Get some PA’s or something else like QSC.

I understand that monitor speakers will sound very dry and flat. But since the speakers are 10 inches away from my head… I need some near field speakers, and PA’s don’t exist in near field as far as I know?

What would you suggest from QSC?

Near field really means lowering the volume and positioning the speaker closer to the listener so that most of the sound comes from the speaker rather than the room.

You don’t need studio monitors for a near field setup, and there’s no reason why you can’t use hi-fi speakers in a near field setup.

In that case I need to get smaller speakers? 5’’ small enough?

Whatever size that will fit in your setup. You might want to add a sub if you only go for 5" though.

Made my mind up, Adam F5 it will be!

And later on maybe the FSub or Sub 7 From Adam.

For the money you are paying, you aren’t getting that much sound. With those monitors, you are paying for clarity that’s unnecessary in trying to DJ. Your dollar is going to go a LOT farther getting something like Rokkits or regular PA speakers. I’d find a way to position some PA’s in your setup, and go that route. If you ONLY have room for small monitors, as you were.

If 5" is your maximum size you could pair some bookshelf speakers with an amp and active hi-fi sub, which will cost even less than Rokits.

PA system is way to big.

The room I dj in is only 4 by 4 meters (maybe even smaller) and I don’t have a lot of options when it comes to positioning the speakers.

Don’t really like the sound of KRK’s. Bookshelf speakers (Eltax Liberty 3) with an amp (Arcam) is what I am currently using and that doesn’t satisfy me.

Unfortunatly I am unable to go by a shop and listen to some monitors since I live on a small island and even on the main land close by there is no place to buy such gear.

I find it very important that the sound, altough it might not be a whole lot with 5’', is tight and not muddy. From what I’ve read the Adam F5 will be an affordable option (390 Euro including Mopads) with tight sound. Hopefully the sub will give me some ‘‘oomph’’ for when I feel like that

if you’re only gonna use them for djing I’d say you’re good with rokits. I have the HS7 and for djing they become quite tiring imo
