A disatisfied hdj-500 owner, anyone else have this problem?

So i had my first club gig last night, it went awesomely except for one thing i could not for the life of me hear my head phones.

I have a pair of pioneer hdj-500’s even when i turned the volume for the headphones on the mixer almost all the way up i could barely barely hear the kick drum. And since i was manually beet matching the hole time it was a little scary being barly able to hear if i was on beet or not.

Has anyone else had this problem before? is something wrong with my headphones? Am i doing this wrong?

I’m guessing the sound isolation on those headphones isn’t what it could be… Do you use the same mixer you use at home? It’s possible it’s a problem with the mixer but my guess is it was just too loud at your gig and that was the first real test of sound isolation in your pioneers. Try some in-ear monitors instead, or get yourself a set of cans known for isolation (sennheiser hd-25s, aiaiais, etc). But don’t keep turning the volume up! That’s an excellent way to ruin your hearing…

Yah it was probably silly of me to to keep trying to turn it up. It just kinda sucks when you spend $100 on “DJ” headphones and they dont really work for that… :\

man I’ve been thinking about picking up a pair of these and this is the first bad review i’ve seen on them. Wonder if it was the mixer or the headphones? Tekki posted he really like them. What other cans have you used and how would you compare them. I currently have 7506’s and was thinking about a white pair of 500’s as summer parties are starting to liven up in Miami.

I’ve seen some other not so good reviews on them.

i’ve read some mediocore ones, but hell they are 100 dollar headphones. I’ve thought about splurging and getting the 2000’s, but not sure if they are worth it. The HD-25’s are also an option but not 100% sold on them. Maybe I should be?

If you want $100 headphones the Sony MDR7506 are the best you can get IMO. Built like tanks with actual metal and the isolation is great. The HD25’s are great headphones and are probably worth the money, but they do squeeze my head pretty tight and I have a small head. All that said I can really tell the difference between both of those and my Ultrasone’s, their marketing about being better for your ears is true. I can really tell a difference after wearing them for hours. There’s a lot less fatigue in my ears with the Ultrasone’s.

Shameless plug

I plan on picking up a set of the HDJ-500’s but only as a backup pair. I love my HD-25’s best investment I have purchased so far. But I would like a decent pair to take with me when I travel on vacation or working in my office away from my DJ area. Have you had any other problems besides some not so great isolation issues?

i wish the hd-25’s had a coiled cord, is it possible to get one for them?

Depending on your location that link might be useful or not, but it can be bought.

2000 on the way?

Not just yet.

chemicalrecords.co.uk used to sell them too (not sure if they still do them or not) they ship worldwide.. im not sure that store dj do.

Other then this one time they’ve been great. They dont sound as good as my hd-555s but thats expected. They also arnt as comfortable (i prefer the over ear to on ear), but they are pretty decent otherwise.
