was checking USB speeds and the Mac I’m getting is almost half the speed of my current laptop. I am suddenly hesitant. Is this an issue? they are both usb2.o though.

Newest MBP run 512MB i believe…
Also newer graphics card technologies etc.
If you ever want to do any vid editing it would be an issue. New software may not run as well (FCP, Ater Effects CS5, etc)
Just music should be ok though 
Yep. You will need to format the disk as fat32 to use it as backup though. Or if its big enough make it a time machine disk.
