I recentyl decided to switch from traktor to cdjs. I got the 850s and can´t keep any loop going with them. If I use the auto loop function the beatmatched tracks will always trainwrack instantly. If I use my quantized loops which I saved in rekordbox I still have the same problem. Is there anyhing I’m missing?
As above- the CDJ850 & CDJ350 do not support reading of quantize information from Rekordbox, so no quantized loops etc.
It was one of the deciding factors that persuaded me to get the 900s. I couldn’t see the sense spending all that money on one of their ‘Rekordbox capable’ players when they don’t actually support one of the biggest reasons to use Rekordbox!
Manual looping (I’ll call it this because the auto-loop on the non-quantize players is effectively the same) isn’t too bad, but if you’ve never experienced it before and are used to the crisp tight loops of Traktor then you are in for a steep learning curve! As mentioned in the link posted above, once you have set the loop you will likely need to adjust the length of the loop very slightly using the loop adjust (which is on the ‘loop out’ button I believe) together with the jogwheel.
It is actually rather straightforward to do once you get used to it, and you can actually do some quite cool stuff using the jog-wheel to modulate the length of the loop whilst it’s playing live.
But the lack of quanitze and the slightly lower frame resolution on the 850 means you will never get the instantly-tight loops that you get on the 900, 2000, or in software.
Yeah i know that it has no quantisation. But that you can´t use those loops at all is really annoying. If I press a Loop it will instantly trainwreck the mix so I wouldn´t even have time to adjust it.
I’ve used the manual loops on the older 1000s before without much problem (using the loop in & loop out buttons to set it), sure you had to give the jogs the odd nudge to keep it playing nicely but nothing that threw the mix out. I wouldn’t have thought the auto-looper should be that far adrift? Have you tried it with different audio sources- i.e. usb / cd etc?
I used the auto-loop section on my old 900s with CDs on several occasions (so no quantizing) and even though it would be slightly off I never got anything that completely train-wrecked.
If it’s doing it that badly though it could be worth giving the manual ‘loop in’ & ‘loop out’ a try rather than the auto-loop section, it can take a little bit of practice but once you’ve nailed hitting the in & out you might find you have a tighter loop than what the player comes up with and it also feels more natural to adjust these on the fly as you are more used to using those specific buttons.
Yeah I expacted that the loops are not fitting perfectly. But I have not expected that the loop function is totally useless. It trainwrecks instantly after I set a loop on one of two beatmatched tracks.
It just takes time and practice. If you dont have a musical background, then just practicing hitting buttons in time with the beat will get you there eventually. You need to learn how to anticipate the end of the loop and hit the out just before it. It just takes time.
If you learn good timing, you can get round all of these kinds of issues on any gear. Otherwise youre just a slave to technology.
instead of spending more money just keep using traktor with control CD’s. I have never even seen record box but I am a total traktor dj. maybe you want serato dj.
if those cd players have midi you might be able to auto loop with tracktor. however it does not matter with traktor you can auto loop anything with it with any traktor control disk using your laptop.
There is some useful stuff in this video, covers the basics of manual looping. It is using the CDJ-1000mk3 but the principal will be exactly the same for the 850.
Thank you! But I tried this and also tried to set the Auto Beat Loop just in Time. But anyways the tracks directly go out of time even if the loop sounds perfect alone.
Idk…this is one of the reasons I’ve never wanted to go back to CDJs.
Back when I had 200s, it was the same way…not as fine frames and instant trainwrecks unless you were really precise with the buttons. I mean…I practiced and got to where I could do it. But there was always that little nagging “this might immediately trainwreck” if I hit loop out more than a frame or two off.
When I played on CDJ-1000s, what I actually did was ignore the looping and just use a hot cue. You had to be quick because of the stupid way they assign cues, but it worked better for me to just set a cue at the loop-in point and then trigger it every 4 beats or 8 beats or however long I wanted the loop. Unfortunately, that takes time…and doesn’t work on the 850s.
It was a lot easier than looping using 2 copies of the same record. But…software still just does it better. It’s worth learning and practicing if you want to use the CDJs, though.
pioneer cdj 850’s are still some pretty sick pieces of dj technology for traktor or serato. its not entirely lost you can get a traktor A6 audio interface with time code cd’s and cords brand new for $300. in traktor it will just switch to relative mode and do the loop. or maybe I don’t understand what your problem is. are you pushing buttons on the cd player to make the loop on your computer in record box?
could you explain to me what he is doing with those cdj 850’s? why does recordbox not switch into relative mode when he makes a loop and play it till he turns it of? is he using time code cd’s?
maybe he needs a updated driver for his decks. or a older version of recordbox
he can contact pioneer if he go’s to www,pioneerdj.com
The nicer CDJs (2000, 900, 2000nxs, 900nxs) will read beat grids, hot cues, cover art, etc. from a rekordbox library either off of a laptop via ethernet or off of a USB key that the library is exported to.
