What does scrolling through tracks have to do with knowing your music? I’ll scroll through a track because i do know my music and want to get to a certain part. That said i don’t really use the jogs anymore to scroll, instead I use endless encoders.
This is true. It might look horrible, but its not all about the looks. You never know til you try it…
Dont get the VCI 100 dude, its a 4 year old controller and Vestax have now stopped producing more of them just to name a few negatives. Plus whats different about it aside from the fact that Ean endorses it and has modified it for DJTT?
That it might be but Im finding that I actually use hotcues alot I usually have anywhere between 6-8 hot cues set up in my music so thats anywhere between 24-32 hot cues I’m looking at, do I hop through them all? No but They are all set at certain points for mixing, Also remember Im mixing mainly trance so some songs I can go through pretty fast with the hotcues and make a very smooth mix.
As to the suggestion for the Novation Launchpad, why would I get that over an APC20 for the same price which also has faders and a handy knob for track scrolling.
Also I do see that there are controllerists that dont use hotcues the same way I do and sorry to have offended you and no im not in for the “pretty looks” Just more of the functionality of the controllers to do what I need them to do.
jogwheels imho are wasted space that could be used for other things I want, its a personal opinion.![]()
= Great reason to buy one. There’s a reason they hold their resale value, I suggest you try one.
You never know MuzicFreq You might actually like it. But I guess we all have our own opinions…
man, I used that one just 2 weeks ago.
And that post was in general, not just aimed at you. You don’t want jogwheels, clearly you don’t want a VCI.
After having my S4 I can certainly see someone saying the jogs on the VCI suck. That said I almost never use the jogs on my S4 anymore.
I prefer VCI jogs. but OP no want jogs. no jog talk.
Well, I can see your and fullenglishpint’s point. But the VCI-100 Is still not a bad controller. But I guess some people just don’t like the VCI-100. Some people just are use to different controllers. But once again I don’t think that people have to like it. We all have our own opinions…
Not cheap by any means and using Ableton but Paul Kalkbrenner’s setup would be AWESOME for trance music. With that many cue points you need perhaps Ableton would be a better choice? ![]()
Check out the movie Berlin Calling for a great DJ movie made by a real DJ turned actor.

I did try ableton on my laptop but it has poor audio quality with ASIO4ALL for some reason, no matter how high the buffer, it crackles alot when time stretching even if it’s from 130bpm to 132bpm >.> But I do plan on getting TP2 and using the sampler decks, but that wont be for a while in a live situation because I wanna make sure I have a good amount of samples on the fly.
I had an idea for a laptop setup, mostly a portable way to try out set ideas and the like.
-Laptop
-Traktor Kontrol X1
-Traktor Audio 2 interface
Basically I could just use this to take with me anywhere and still be able to actually have a set, even play a house party in a pinch.
What do you think?
I sometimes use just that when I don’t want to carry a ton of gear around. It’s good, but what you lack is pitch control, levels and (without remapping, which is what I did) EQ control.
Not being able to adjust pitch easily is a bit of a pain, it’s ok if you’re just mixing a set with properly beatgridded tracks, but if you’re mixing in and out of other people it’s tricky. Levels I also found annoying, normally end up using my MBP trackpad. EQ I got round by just mapping a filter to the bottom FX knob on each side, it’s a bit rough n ready but it works.
Of course, if you have a mixer to plug into then levels and EQ are no problem.
Dude props.
You are one of the first people I have heard that “ponders” what they should buy, and decided on this.
This is exactly what I use right now, I absolutely adore the simplicity and minimalistic nature.
The stock mapping has a tap tempo buttons, as well as tempo +/-, and nudge up/down buttons. These I find more than adequate for all tempo adjustment needs.
…and if the person ahead of you is using serato, or traktor, or a CDJ with BPM readout, or the mixer itself has BPM readout, then you can just type that into the master temp, and sync to it real quick to set the BPM, then use nudge to get it beat matched, and small +/- as needed.
Also, if you had any thoughts about like, a midi fighter instead, or you just like the idea of having a midi fighter shoehorned into your X1… read this:
And beyond that, the mapping capabilities of the X1 are ENDLESS.
I have a mapping I am particularly fond of that retains all of the stock mappings functionality, and also adds all needed controls for controlling the mixing functions of two decks of internal mixing in Traktor.
Do you guys find it difficult to mix without having volume faders?
Hey there, i have posted my dj set up and explanation on my blog. I use ableton live and a uc 33 evolution as my control surface. The article in my website goes into more detail about the actual set up.

cheers,
Maybe difficult isn’t the right word, it’s certainly possible, but I’m uncomfortable without volume faders.
Is it possible to assign the FX knobs to the EQ and Gain knobs? I suppose you could use them like a rotary mixer.
