come on guys lets get down with 10minmix

thinking about entering in the 10minmix comp, anybody want to enter in with me, the january comp is still going on prob gonna make a video tomorrow.

who wants to enter in with me, not enough laptop dj’s in there, its either cdj or tts lets make it a lil more diverse :sunglasses:

I think in February I will have my set up together enough, and I might be making multiple ones of these…

I can’t look at youtube at work. What is the 411 on these 10min mixes?

Edit: This isn’t the Bali comp is it? I think that’s over.

I am down to enter, never done a teniminmix comp, when is the deadline for the january comp? I only hope I won’t give digitaldj’ing a bad name, so maybe I will try to post to the mix here a few times (iteratively revise it) both as a learning process for me and so I don’t embarass the community.
Matt
I am also in need of a name, thinking of DJ Taita, DJ Arnon or DJ NIKNAK which a friend suggested, possibly even just NIKNAK (but I feel like it is presumptuous to not add DJ, because it says, I am so big I don’t need to tell you I’m a DJ) but I do like it best. Can you guys make some suggestions for me?

Go with NIKNAK then. If you can feel comfortable with your persona then you’ll want to be it more.

djxsquizet: thought you were djing in ableton? cause at tenminmix you’ll get points subtracted if you don’t manually beatmatch - so you ain’t gonna win then…

i would be ready to enter the competition, but that’s not very nice as i am using traktor pro and sync all my tracks to the master clock…

they take off points for not manually beatmatching? But… but we can do so much more

I think I’ll take up the challenge. I’ll see what I can put together over the weekend.

Not sure how effective it would be to enter so late in the month. They mention, the earlier you can submit the better your chances are in getting noticed, via by number of views/ratings/comments left on youtube.

OoO, i didnt know they took off points for that?! new rule i guess.

hmm can’t beatmatch (much at all, have been working on it) so I can either do it for its own merit (which is fine because I am not entering to win, just for experience), or I can really up my beatmatching practice time this week, and practice with the songs I am going to use. Is it considered improper to rehearse for a tenminmix, are they supposed to be created (not just performed live)? If not I could figure out my tenminmix and then beatmatch the songs I am using in advance. Beatmatching with visuals (and a grid) really isn’t that bad. Also I like NIKNAK, butI think I will use DJ NIKNAK also because it feels weird just calling myself NIKNAK (IE. Madonna)

Oh the other thing I was thinking is that since we (digital dj’s) largely advocate that beatmatching is unnecessary (except in certain special cases for style) and that not having to do so lets us do more, shouldn’t we just use sync and expect to make up points based on the other stuff we can do with the extra time?
DJ NIKNAK

Well, I mean, I can “manually” beatmatch by moving a pitch fader… but it’s as good as sync cause I know what the BPMs are. This is where the manual vs sync argument kind of starts falling apart with me. What’s the difference of hitting a button and having an accurate digital readout of my bpm’s pre and post pitch fader?

If you decide to get into production you can always just be NikNak for that (and give a dog a bone)

Hey Xsquizet,

Funny you mentioned this, actually I was preparing one just for the fun of messing with Djtutor (Don´t get me wrong, I love Ellaskins he is a great teacher, actually I learned a lot from his videos). I am doing a mix which includes multiple decks, deck copy function, loop moving etc, the impossible for TTs. Lets hit them with the best shot, but rather post it at the begining of february that at the end of the month so we can get more visits and ratings. 1 hour on ministry of sound radio sounds tempting… not as much as a gig n bali… but that spot is taken :disappointed:

I am with you xsquizet but in february

you’re so right!
imo it’s important to beatmatch… but at some point you should just leave it and hit the sync button and invest your “performing time” in something much more important than simple beatmatching!

after this thread i was thinking about attending too, but this kinda keeps me away from it… also the rules state that points should be given ONLY for mixing, not for turntablism (and so they won’t give points for controllerism either)…
so i think we should just start our own monthly DJTT tenminmix competition - that would be so grand!
well… i know i wouldn’t even have the slightest chance to be in the top 20 in such a competition, but it would be fun and everyone could learn from each other (watching their techniques in the videos)!

well i say screw the rule, I say feb. is straight to, but if we hit dj tutor hard with our videos maybe he will see something, because there is a lack of people using traktor or ableton.

lets do feb see where we place if its biased start are own comp. if the person wins the comp they get interviewed and put on the front page or something like that.

but i want to show dj tutor that we considered dj’s also

If you win you get 1 hour at ministry of sound radio. Not bad !

that ain’t bad either, but i was talking about if djtechtools did there own comp

Sure that is a great idea. Though I have always imagine a comp were the tracks are already define, for instance they give you five tracks and everyone needs to show what they can do with them. Would love to see that.

I’ll enter for Feb. with you guys too

I think this sounds like a good way to push myself from my initial learning. Just got my VCI a few weeks ago, but recording a few mixes before early february will narrow in my skills, if I can ignore all the hater YouTube comments.

Agreed

Kinda like when people are on you about “knowing” the bpm of a track from reading the bpm window on your software. And when you tell them that, “but that is like if I have figured out the bpm in some way beforehand and have it written down on the sleeve of the vinyl I’m about to play”

The response I usually get
