DDJ-S1, your opinion?

Hey there,

As mentioned in the title, I am searching your opinion for this midi-controller.
Is there anyone of you on this forum who has used it?
Most videos on youtube is promos..
Have a guy selling it for a bargain compared to that I thought of buying cdjs.

What appeals to me is the slip mode and the hot cues which only occurs on cdj 1000. The price is significantly less than a cdj 400 set (30% cheaper) in the used market. And there are more features, but with the simple layout.

Heard some people totally crush the quality of the soundcard, but I wonder, was that only the T1?

Had the S4 before and I liked it, but I am more into the traditional mixing and hence I bought a macbook pro 13’’ mainly for use with controllers the S1 at this price seems quite legit.

Price is 700 Euro.

Im an itch fan and took a strong look at the S1. It’s gotten great user reviews on the serato forum and so did the soundcard. I ended up with cdj 400’s and also sold my S4 for a more traditional set up. I’ve seen the S1 in action and it looked and sounded great. It would be my first choice for a controller right now if I wanted a traditional work flow.

I think it makes sense to wait until BPM to see Pioneer’s new controller before you buy the S1. It’s only a month away.

Thanks for your answer haze324,

yea, I also read seratoforum and from whats said there it seems quite ok, least better than the t1.

Although I never used itch before, only traktor and cdjs, I think there will not be such a hassle learning to handle it, or what do you think?

Although I was thinking bout the effect section, do you have to tap the beat in or can u put it to auto for the effects? like on the djm-400?

love it in principle

but like all all-in-one controllers it suffers from it size, especially if you plan on playing out in bars and clubs

wish Pioneer would make an X-1 competitor or something similar, i think they’d kill it, especially seeing as they have one of the best jogs in the business in the shape of their CDJ series

but as nem0nic said you’re probs better off waiting for BPM

yeah I guess..

30 days of anticipation. Although odds that they bring some meat to table is high.

The DDJ-S1 is massive (although that’s not necessarily a bad thing, just depends what you’re after), and if the jogs are the same as the T1 then I hate them. I hate them I hate them I hate them. So scratchy and horrible, it feels like you’re using a cookie cutter to make a hole in your controller.

I don’t think they are the same as the T1.
Actually most people confirm their a hell lot of difference experience, similar to the jogs of cdj 400 or even better.

The S1 should be smaller than the T1 right? since its only 2 channels..

Effects are auto or tap.

The work flow of Itch is VERY similar to using two CDJ’s and a mixer. Very straight fwd and easy to use. It’s what I enjoy most about it. The effects are post fader and although there is not alot to choose from they provide very similar effects to what you get on a 400.

Yes it’s a little big to squeeze into a booth that already has gear. However for a mobile DJ or a lounge/bar that requires you to bring your gear it’s perfect sized because it looks and feels like “real” gear vs. a controller (smaller sized).

If the price is right I would get it. Regardless of what comes out - two CDJ’s and mixer is not going out of style anytime soon.

I know, but it’s quite simple, have S1 when I have to bring my own gear and at places which have cdjs installed I just bring cds.

All right now is depending on what price I can get on what gear and conditions of gear

+1

Exactly.

It’s light, feels like real gear, and is plug and play. Final option down the road would be to get an SSL box when playing somwhere with CDJ’s. Then your workflow, cue points, crates, library, etc would all be the same from your controller/portable set up or your club set up.

I had the chance to try one today for half an hour.
I’ll give you a brief first impression, which I can only compare to the S4, NS6 or VCI100.

Cons:

  • Materials used to build this feel cheap and flimsy.
  • Jog wheels are a bit bigger than the S4 but smaller than NS6.
  • Knobs aren’t rubberized, and are hard to turn.
  • The needle drop feature felt completely overrated and useless (same on NS6, but the strip isn’t in the middle of the controller).

Pros:

  • Looping section is similar to S4 (knob drops a loop & changes loop size).

For 700 euros, I would give the NS6 a try if you want the CDJ feel, and it would still be Serato Itch.. and layout is good and a lot of what DDJ-S1 has on the controller, is put on the back or the front panel (crossfader options, mic inputs)

Honestly, I’m a bit jealous of my roommate’s NS6 right now… and was not impressed at all by the DDJ-S1… especially for the price.

^ Really? For me it was the opposite. I wasn’t impressed with the NS6. I used to have an NS7 and perhaps that is why. The NS7 quality in buttons, knobs, etc. all feels as good as any pro gear out there. Also the jogs on the S1 are the same as CDJ-400’s, don’t know how that could be a con?

On another note. Pioneer announced a huge price drop today on the DDJ S1. They are now 999.00 and come with a free soft bag (250.00) thru sept. Guitar Center has 15% off this weekend so that would be 850.00 for a DDJ-S1 + Bag. That’s a SWEET DEAL.

That deal is super tempting…hmmmm

Now it just really feels that they are dropping something heavy news at the BPM in 28 days.. jeez it just kills me to wait for it!
Although 850 for bag + ddj-s1 is less than 700 euro and this controller is used.
But in sweden we also pay taxes, 25% on all electronical equipment.
Compared to taxes in the US, NYC where it’s like 10% and even if some states there is no tax like this, am I right?

most places have sales tax, sometimes you can get around it when you order online — but’s normally less that 10%. The S1 came out less than a year ago. There are not much changes in Itch that the S1 can not control. The sampler is still not midi mappable. I think the drop is not so much of something new and better, but sales, the price of the NS6 and now the Traktor S2. For the price I might get it. Two CDJ and a mixer are not going out of style anytime soon.

@haze324 guitarcenter.com is still showing the previous price. Do you have a link to the updated price + free bag?

EDIT: stopped by and they indeed lowered the price. They are giving out a voucher for the bag.

After playing with the DDJ-S1s jogs I gotta agree with fullenglishpint that the jogs are wack.

Played around with the NS6 and wow, those jogs are awesome. So awesome that I purchased one.

No good offers from the swedish stores on this product yet..

I had the chance to compare the S1 and T1 today (brand new demos) .. and the knobs on the T1 are better, the jogs are bad on both (ball bearing powered??!) .. but the faders (pitch/volume/xfader) feel cheap too, they aren’t silky smooth at all…
