what’s the best dj headphones for the money? i’ve been looking into Pioneer HDJ 2000 and Allen&Heat Xone XD53 but they are kinda expensive, so here is my question. SHould i buy some cheaper headphones that are good or just save up fore pioneers or A&H?
technics rp-dh1200 are great and got them for 90$ on amazon.com (average price is 200$) if you call up guitar center and do price-match guarantee you can get them for cheaper
I’ll 2nd that suggestion, I’ve had my hair of HD-25’s for years, and they have been the best I’ve ever used, hands down.
A few reasons:
User replaceable parts. No need to junk them if one part goes faulty.
Minimal, extremely rugged design. Not much room for defects on these
Doesn’t have an excessively long coiled cord (i.e: Sony MDR-V6)
Superior (yes, I put that word in bold) sound isolation. Better isolation means lower volumes to hear what you need to hear
Extremely light weight, they feel like nothing is on your head when you are using them. Does not give the same fatigue you get with heavier, more bulky DJ headphones
Banging sound quality, excellent low frequency response
Try a pair out at a nearby store. You’ll see what we mean
There really isn’t a performance differences between any of the variant models. I think the latest MKII simply implements a 24k gold connector for the headphones, which is cool for preventing corrosion, but doesn’t in any way improve sound quality.
There is the HD-25p, avoid them as the ears spin round and the cable gets all tangled. There’s the HD-25 Mk1 which is what I got, they are awesome. And then there’s the HD-25 Mk2, which look exactly the same as the Mk1 but they have the gold connectors and apparently they have improved drivers in the earphones. To be honest I got mine a good, hmmmm, flipping hell, about 8 years ago, shit times flies, and they are good as new, look fresh out the box. I got mine for £99, about $140. Well worth the money! Tough as hell, nice full sound, comfortable for DJing, only gripe is they are quite tight when just listening to music, like on your ipod, for long periods of time. But for DJing I havent come across any headphones that rival them!
Oh THATS what he was talking about. Nah, dont like the SP series ones, I remember ages ago almost buying those online mistaking them for the actual HD-25 MK1, lord that would have sucked.
The issue with buying cheaper headphones is you’ll burn through them faster. I spent the $200 on my hd25-II’s and I haven’t needed anything else since.
Yeah, I also own the HDJ-1000’s, and barely touch them. Compared to the HD-25’s, theyre incredibly weighted on the head when worn for extended periods of time, bulky, easier to break (the hinges are similar to the fabled MDR-V700…augh), and sound quality is very colored.
When I say colored, I mean that they predominantly cater to the lower end of the sound spectrum, and the lows flood the mids quite a bit.
Actually I own those too! (I swear I’m not bullshiting you, I’m just an equipment whore lmao).
Build: The HDJ-2000 are very much so more comparable in quality to the HD-25’s, at that point it’s a matter of preference. The 2000’s are extremely durable (and flexible, they can be bent in any extreme position), with an aluminum frame and durable hinge which I assure you is impossible to break. Weight wise, they are still heavier than the HD-25’s, but they are way more comfortable to use than most DJ headphones.
Isolation: No question about it, the HD-25’s still win on this one. The ear pads on the 2000 are circumaural, which means that they plop completely around the ears rather than on top of them. Depending on the shape of your head and ears, they may or may not work great for you. I find that in loud environments, I have to press the cups against my head to better push out ambient noise.
Sound: I feel that the 2000’s have a better edge and they are clean and balanced. This however doesn’t mean that they are indefinitely better than the HD-25’s, they just have a different personality so to speak. HD-25’s to me sound more flat (with a slight lean towards low end frequencies), and I love that.
Verdict: My opinion is that the HDJ-2000 make better studio headphones than DJ headphones, whereas the HD-25’s can serve as both if need be. I predominantly attribute this conclusion to the isolation qualities of the 2000.
just get the HD 25’s! have faith brother, we’re not lying to you. i went thru 2 cheap pairs before buying mine. i wish i just got them first. dont even bother looking for anything else. they are the tits man!
I’ll be honest, the only nice headphones I’ve used are the Sony mdr 7506 (first pair of decent cans) and the ATH M50 (current pair). I love the Audio technica cans, And I picked them up for 100 bucks. My roomate is going to purchase the Ultrasone DJ1 pro’s, so I guess it will be cool to compare them, but honestly, I dont see myself moving away from these any time soon. They are a tad bit tight, but if you let them sit out over a box of tissues they loosen up a bit.
