I’m having real trouble coming up with a DJ name, and i’ve been wondering…how important is it to have a name that isn’t your real name? As a personal preference I dislike DJ names that start with the word “DJ”. I much prefer single word names like Deadmau5 or Tiesto and so on…
So theres those big names..then there are those who just use their actual name like David Guetta, Paul Oakenfold…hell Ean Golden!
Being Chinese, I don’t have a name that stands out (seeing as we don’t have that great a variety of last names). It’s Anson Cheung. So I’m thinking a stage name would be more memorable…
so
how important is it to have a stage name, do you think?
That’s your job to make it memorable with a good product. You could call yourself something stupid like space monkey but it doesn’t matter if you rock peoples’ asses off. Anson Cheung is not a bad name to me.
Personally, I think you should have a moniker, if anything, to keep your real name private. In this day and age there is SO much active information, it’s easier to just use a fake name, which almost every single popular musician does, and I wouldn’t be surprised is most DJs do too.
I mean, it can be a real name, just not YOUR real name. It also can be simpler for starting businesses, keeping paperwork separate, etc. etc. etc.. I’d say make some sort of moniker, but it doesn’t necessarily have to be DJ Smokes and Bones or whatever.
Lance Blaise is my real name… but i have also produced and dj’d under the names Tattoo Detectives, and Tacopimp. I like just using my regular name… eh..
It depends how your real name sounds.
Both Lance Blaise and Miyuru Fernando are great.
But Alexander Zigelsky is bullshit, so I went Ali or Hedgehog (can’t decide).
I can’t think of anyone for you.
Anson Cheung → Ch.Anson = french for song …but meeeh…that’s not good
I’ve been lumbered with a name that I picked when I joined a website 10 years ago, which I used for almost every site I joined afterwards (including this one) … and I hate it, no-one can spell of pronounce it, but I can’t think of anything better.
I kinda drifted into DJing after joining a festival site, and then the associated internet radio so I go lumbered with my forum name.
My real name (Sam Tait) is a bit ‘meh’, and I like DJ names that make sense - people like DJ Format (his names Matt Ford), that reflects part of their personality (Brad Baloo from the Nextmen looks like a flippin great bear) or that’s witty with language (most recent example I’ve seen are a pair of guys called the Sisters of Transistors)
I’ve kinda accepted it though, I don;'t like the name, but it’s what people know me as, and almost no-one else has anything like it.
The name should sound nice to your homecountry audience. Anson could be a good name at a lot of places, but if it doesn’t work well at China and there is your bigger audience then you should chose a better name.
For me, a brazilian guy, Anson is a good name, but you can play a little with Cheung to make it sounds better at anyplace.
