hey i was wondering if we could make a compilation of documentaries, mockumentaries, movies etc that are related to djing, party and music. there are so many times i feel like watching something but can’t think from the top of my head. i guess the most obvious one is its all gone pete tong.
speaking in code is relatively new, can’t wait for the screening to hit new york in october
German Doco about the dance scene from the mid 80’s to present day. Pretty good, interesting to see a fresh faced PVD, Sven Vath etc. Its subbed but a little lacking in the translation in parts.
As usual I have to recommend Kevin & Perry Go Large, which is on its surface a completely over the top and often unbelievable disgusting teenie comedy, but also the IMO most realistic depiction of life as a small town beginner DJ that has ever been put on film. The secret weapon of the movie is the always great Rhys Ifans, who embodies here as “Eye Ball Paul” every negative (and unfortunately often true) Superstar DJ cliche that you can think off. Disclaimer: You shouldn’t be too allergic against mid-90’s Ibiza trance sounds (Ayla), although the soundtrack also features tracks from Fatboy Slim and Underworld.
I strongly recommend somehow you see Cyderdelic, it’s a mockumentary about these “eco warrior/ hippies” from Devon in England that is fronted by Marc Wotton (all of you who know who he is will know how good he is) and they promote their ideas by their dance music. The difference is with this is that they did actually play at loads of festivals and did write all the music and had a float at the Berlin love parade and stuff. It is really really funny!!
Narrated by the legendary John Peel as well!!!
My mate was in it too as I used to live in Devon and he was working in a shop when they went in and did a sketch!!!
I caught the tail end of a documentary about some promoter that was putting together a rave sort of event…it was basically a camera following a promoter straight through to the end of the event. can’t remember the name…anyone seen it?
Another must-see is “Maestro”, a documentary primarily about New York’s Loft and Paradise Garage.
The 3 part Channel 4 documentary “Pump up the volume - History of House Music” was spot on imo http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0847411/
Here’s the 1st 9mins on youtube to get you started
High Tech Soul - High Tech Soul: The Creation of Techno Music (Video 2006) - Plot - IMDb
This is by far one of my favorite documentaries on techno music. It really breaks down who, what, why, when, and how the creation of techno music developed out of detroit and how they moved it overseas and all around the world. At the same time this is sad to see what happened to the city of Detroit, but it makes you really appreciate the music and the originators of techno, that much more!
Darkbeat: An Electro World Voyage - http://darkbeatmovie.com/
I have a copy of this… pretty good movie, best of luck finding it anywhere though…
I still watch scratch every few months, and i’ve had it for years.
R.I.P. Was awesome, made me want to join the MLF.
I can’t wait to see Electro wars.
As for the rest, i haven’t seen hardly any of these. Looks like i got a long night. I needed a break from this Bassnectar remix i’ve been working on anyway.
