Dubstep, Deep House, Trance, Drums and Bass…
How the heck to I learn about all these different types? I’m out there just listening to stuff, but I don’t really know what the differences are. Is there a good resource for this stuff?

‘dis be da’ answer to all ya’ questions:

Nah but check it out. Really.
Go to Beatport or Juno download and check out the charts
Music genres can be hard to figure out. There’s nuances that you’ll pick up on over time.
Of course there’s any easy way to tell with some of them.
Drum and Bass = 174 bpm usually
Dubstep = 140 bpm usually
House = Anywhere from 123-130 depending on the variation
then there are subgenres. House has a million of them.
Here ya go - all of the genres covered in my recent mixes (except trance)
Another 3 hour set covering all sorts of stuff from Deep House thru SomethingStep, Breaks and even a little hip hop…

For Drum & Bass and a little bit of Dubstep, it’s worthwhile subscribing to the Drum & Bass Arena newsletter (breakbeat.co.uk), they even have the occasional free track ![]()
I’ve never seen that.
nah, it’s pretty ok, has loads of music examples (which is big plus). Truth is that author is biased against certain styles (see, disco or hip hop genres). but the really bad thing is, that it isn’t actual anymore. like no dubstep there and such. It fits EDM progress until like 2002 i guess..
Keep the info coming, you guys are constantly a big help, thank you.
I can help out with the dnb
pretty much anything written at around 165-170 with a break beat AND constant forward motion, it can be justified as drum n bass, although if it has heavy use of the amen break (wikipedia the amen break as it is probably the most important musical innovation of the last century next to jazz music), it can usually be considered jungle.
The main current subgenres of drum n bass are Jump-up, Neurofunk, Tech-Step, Minimal, Liquid, Drumfunk, and Drumstep. Most tracks will fit into one or more of these subgenres based on their charactaristics.
Jump-up’s main charactaristic is it’s main break or drumline. This is called the Step Break.
Neurofunk’s main charactaristic is it’s funky basslines and intricate use of synthesizers. Traditionally, a neurofunk track will have many variants of the main groove but will have little to no variants on the drum pattern. Neurofunk is arguably the most difficult genre to produce and mix. Most Neurofunk tracks have dark over and undertones
Tech step shares tones and instruments found in Techno, thus the name. Usually dark in nature and usually a sci-fi feel to the track. Neurofunk evolved from this subgenre
Minimal, like minimal house, is designed to sound, well, minimal. Blue Motion’s - Wall of Silence is a good example.
Liquid - Deep rolling basslines, cleaner sounds, and generally a brighter tone than most dnb. What can be called feelgood or intelligent drum n bass. Mixing this is about setting and maintaining a vibe rather than rocking a dance floor, in general. There are some banging Liquidfunk tracks, but not very many. Although this is primarily a lighter sound, there is also dark liquid. a good example of dark liquid is S.P.Y. out of Sao Paolo, Brazil. his tracks are generally dark but still maintain a liquid vibe.
Drumfunk is a subgenre of liquid that has heavily sequenced drums; usually on the backbeat.
IF the track is written dnb tempo AND is written with a two step groove, it is what is called Drumstep or halfstep as it is known in some parts of the world. at first, it can easily be confused with dubstep.
hope this helps ![]()
This is a really cool site with lots of information, thanx.
That is true. The author has an obvious, huge bias.
But I still think it’s kinda cool. The concept behind it and the way it’s set up is pretty cool, even if it’s not completely up to date.
It’s an entertaining read and gives at least some direction.
you know this was originally created as a complete joke, right? incredibly unreliable.
So what you’re saying is that, even if it’s not to be taken seriously, none of the information is true?
You do know that there is some legitimate information in there, right? No it’s not a “definitive source,” but then again, what is?
This subject would make a good thesis.
if it goes boom - boom - boom - boom it’s house
if it goes boom - boom - boom - boom it’s trance
if it goes boom - boom - boom - boom it’s hard house
if it goes boom - boom - boom - boom it’s hardcore
if it goes boom - boom - boom - boomboom it’s speed garage
if it goes b-boom - boom - boom -b-b-b-boom it’s breaks, or faster it’s drum and bass
if it sounds shit it’s lady gaga
you don’t need any of this info. Anybody asks what style of music you play you say “I play both kinds – drum AND bass.”
Reminds me of that scene in “This Is Spinal Tap” when Michael St. Hubbins asks Viv, the keyboard player, if he can cover the bass parts on a certain song and he replies “Yeah, I got 2 hands”
As a bass player, I got this a lot.
