Genres

Genres

Hey.
I start this thread so that I can learn the differences between different genres of dance music. Maybe that sounds weird, but to be honest I just dont see any differences when checking out new songs on Beatport. Some of them are labeled “Progressive House” or “Minimal” and they sound pretty similiar (I dont say they sound the same).
Maybe some of you could make an outline whats the difference between each genre.

Not to cut the forum short but there is always:

But I’m sure its better to get some of DJTT to explain too.

Oh lord, genres? heh

I just call it all Electronic.

Init !!!

Check out Techno and Minmal … Whats goin on there!!! Both contain more or less the same style does my head in !!!

There are really too many subgenres around.
I allways try to ignore most of them, because I only need one crate filled with HipHop, one crate with ElektronicBeats, and so on.
I also don’t search for any special genre when I’m shopping at Juno, Beatport, and so on. I allways buy and later play what I like. Most times the tracks are labled with the wrong genre anyways. And very often they don’t even have the correct genre available.
E.g. I don’t see Baltimore Club or Nu Rave on Beatport, but you can find tracks that fit into these categories somewhere else on Beatport.

My advice is to find your own style of what music you play, and don’t care to much about what any magazin, journalist or any other dude calls it.

Check:
Wiley - Wut U Call It
I think he was totally right

How do you shop then seen as both Juno and Betport are split into genres ?

Do you go through every genre ?

Errrrr…

Endlessly debating genres is what music geeks do, right? And that’s what we do well. It is human nature, of course to name things we see (and hear).

Anyway I reckon Minimal is a sub-genre that falls broadly in the realm of Techno. But I’m sure there are people that would think I’m wrong. Of course, I prefer Tech-house because admitting to liking Minimal is like admitting to liking the sound of your heating system turn itself on and off.

Anyway, cross-genre pollonisation buzzword of the month:

Dubstepno (Dubstep and Techno)!

See, but what is in your opinion the differnce between Tech House and Minimal. I think Tech House is also minimalstic, maybe a little bit more jazzy or Lounge-like. And maybe some more vocals, but not necessary?

Any definition of house music that doesn’t mention Derrick Carter is clearly incomplete.

It’s all just electronic music to me. No matter if it’s called this or that by some people who have nothing to do than create stupid new genrenames.

Of course I also don’t have any hidden genres in the shops, but most times I know names of the artists and songtitles. That often takes me to similar tracks, and so on. Same as visiting a blog and then try out some of the links.
When I was looking for Baltimore Club, I didn’t find it on Beatport, then on Beatsource they had a few tracks I knew in Club HipHop.

For me it wouldn’t make sense to search for special subgenrenames, because then I’d sleep on to many dopw tracks. I prefer spend some time and listen to as much music as I can to find new tunes.

House Music is like Ice Cream…their are many flavors of house just like ice cream. You just have to find what flavor you like and go with it. My fav is Classic House ie: Nightcrawlers, Bob Sinclair, Aly Us and so on.

Exactly my point. Not a lot. I’d like to think that tech-house is a little bit more melody driven than mnml and also carries a few of the antecedents of disco as opposed to the metallic microloops of techno. Basically I keep on trying to throw my housemates copy of Erotic Discourse by Bobby Peru out of the window whilst trying to keep hold of the likes of Meine by Daso.

But at the end of the day, it’s all semantics, no? But fun semantics!

To use a boxing analogy, you can throw a jab, a roundhouse, a hook, or an uppercut, all to devestating effect. But a good boxer will know what punch he has thrown.

Or maybe the wine has just kicked in!

bows Im not worthy!

Ok - it seems that nobody dares to take the plunge and answer the qustion. Since I have extremely much love for these genres, I will give it a go.

First of - yes minimal is a techno sub-genre, hence the name Minimal Techno. Thats why minimal is based on the same foundation as techno - the heavy 4/4 kick and a solid bass. But that dosent really answer your question, whats the diffence?
The difference lies in the way the melody is presented and the tools and sounds used for this. While Techno uses bigger and more muddy sound, minimal uses small and characterestic sounds. The “Techno sounds” are more simular to the biiiig and loooong sounds used in trance (not saying that techno and trance sounds are the same, at all!). The minimal sounds are small and often reffered to as Blip Blop sounds.

To give you an example, have a listen to these two tracks:

Techno: Extrawelt - Titelheld (original version)
Minimal: Alex Young - Minimal It (original version)
(Both can be found on Beatport)

Pay attension to the difference in “amount” of sound and size of the “sound picture”.

I hope this explanation helps you to understand the difference.

PS: Add IMO’s where apropriate

Yeah, massive respect to Ishkurs guide. No doubt. BUT, you may not take it to serious. It is VERY outdated and has an unrealsitc focus on the amarican part of the electronic music scene (no hate intendet). Also, the genres are presented with a very subjective point of view

What she said, that site hold all the answers

hear we go again…you forgot the “Thats…”

Not really, since only the 80’s and 90’s are included. For an example, Techno in the 90’s is not at all the same as Techno today.

This.

That site is gold. I like some of his comments.

To me you can roughly desribe something into a genre to try and explain it to people and to make it easier to find stuff yourself. IMO its when you start getting fucking specific like: indie-funk-ghetto-tech-polka-house that things start getting retarded.

Trying to label every little subtle difference in style is just meh.

Thats why I like Dubstep theres a whole push especially by the founding members of the style that there are no Dubstep ‘sub-genres’ its all dubstep. Be it 2-step garage inspired, DnB inspired, Dub, Grime, Techno, Electro, House, Metal, Trance, Funk, Polka whatever its all still just dubstep.
