Now some of you may have used Spotify, maybe some of you haven’t. It’s basically an online radio and you can make your own playlists of basically any song you can think of.
What do all you think about using it for background music during a gig? Maybe during dinner at a party or reception, or lets say someone must have a song played, you can use spotify to get it or play it real fast. How does everyone else feel about using it? The $10 month premium you can get all the music you want without any commercials.
I don’t mean using it for your main music list for the night, but just on those situations like song request, and maybe save some money by using it for a dinner playlist instead of buying all those songs.
Well technically if you play a song at a gig where someone is paying you, lets say n avicii song, then technically that is illegal because you don’t have permision from the record company that owns the music to play it and make money off of it…
But i mean more for just like at dinner, or unless there was a song i forgot to get and someone had to have it played. I wouldn’t use it for my main music playlist for the night.
one bar I gig frequently uses it from when they open until the DJ starts at midnight and for that it seam do be fine. People are there mainly to get social and have some drink before the real party gets going.
Its wicked! I just signed up for premium. Basically I used to not “believe” in it thinking that if I like a song i want to “own” it cause I may want to dj with it. But bottom line is I now listen to far more music without having to worry about buying it and if I like it then I buy it.
It’s brilliant, endless fresh music, total revelation for me that.
Totally cool to use it in offline mode for warm up / dinner lists IMO.
Genuinely never even used it… I just see it popping up in my news feed and I think “he’s really listening to THAT?”
A few days back I saw a hiphop head I know was listening to R.E.M and I thought “wow, I didn’t expect that”… it was kinda cool.
Offline Mode? I thought you had to be online to listen to it… (ignorance showing here).
This is the problem:
The Spotify Service and the content provided through it are the property of Spotify or Spotify’s licensors, and we grant you a limited, non-exclusive, revocable licence to make personal, non-commercial use of the Spotify Service.
found in Spotify Terms and Conditions of Use.
We had a chap from Spotify on this forum some time back. A user posted a question if something like Spotify could be incorporated into Traktor or other DJ software.
The answer was that it could easily be implemented but the copyright laws of different countries would make it impossible to do.
…on the subject of whether people actually use it for DJ purposes, yeah course they do. Just like people use iTunes downloads which are just as illegal to use for commercial purposes as Spotify… people do it.
The sharing to Facebook thing is a bit odd, you can turn it off but I just forget.
The radio feature is great for finding new music. Basically if you like a song/artist you can just hit the “start radio” button and it starts playing same sort of shizzle. So wicked way to discover music. If it’s good you can save it into a playlist etc. They got loads of underground tunes too, the database is huge!
A “Download” is a purchased Product that you can (1) transfer to a compatible portable device, (2) save to your hard drive with unlimited playback time, or (3) burn to a CD/DVD, in each case for personal private use only and not for commercial or public use or distribution.
is written in the legal terms of beatport. Actually I am quite a bit confused. What is the difference between any of spotify’s / itune’s and beatport’s terms?
Also on CDs the term “only for personal use” can be found frequently…
I always thought CDs, Beatport and iTunes would be legal for pubic use - Spotify would not be, in any case an extra licence is needed for the specific event. Maybe you just need a different licence for an event that uses Spotify cause it specifies as “similar to radio”, which requires a much more expensive licence for use in public (at least in Germany).
On the Spotify website the article about this new DJ app that uses Spotify clearly states
All DJ professionals
this in it’s strictest terms mean DJ’s that earn money from DJing, that’s what Professional means.
Maybe there is a new licence that cover the use of Spotify with the app.
I still think this will have country specific legal problems. A UK DJ is ‘supposed’ to have a ProDub licence to play copied MP3’s etc. If you do not copy or own or have locally stored versions of the media then this licence requirement is redundant and it’s VERY British to not allow such things. PRS will have a fit.
