HELP! busted usb port on Nanopad, pics incl.

sorry if this is a missposted thread, but i reckon a repair is a bit of “mod”, at least this is the most solderoriented part of this forum..

Somehow i busted the usb port on my nanopad, i opened it up and the usb connector had come loose.

It´s probably still under warranty (bought less than a year ago) but the place where i bought it has closed or moved, and i have no idea where they are now.

I tried emailing Korg, but no luck. I have a show coming soon (actually 2) and i feel handicapped without the nanopad, i don´t have time to do it the corporate way, i need it fixed yesterday.

I included pictures of how it looks, and my question can i solder this?

the lighter green parts of the curcuitboard seems to be the connectors, and they seem pretty busted, but i dont know if that actually is where the signal is transmitted.

MY THEORY: i think i can simply solder the four connection points (in the corners of the usb connector) back to the board and everything is going to be sweet as candy.

Would that work?

ALSO: i don´t care how it is fixed, just need it done, do you know of any other way i could do it? does anyone know how to deal quickly with korg, could i simply buy anyones broken nanopad (broken buttons seems to be common) and switch the chip.

simply put, HELP ME!

I just recently “hardwired” a new cable onto my Nanokontrol as the USB port had come off the board and stripped the solder points.

  1. Take your mini-usb end of the cable and cut it off..strip it back carefully and you’ll have 4 wires.

  2. Follow this guide USB pinout diagram @ pinouts.ru

  3. If you follow the pins on the board you can solder direct to the next component on the same track.

Pin 4 “Ground” is on the board closest to you looking down (marked as GND on the board itself :slight_smile:

+5v (red need to be soldered to a surface resistor if I remember right).

You could always solder from the connector pins if you REALLY want to retain the mini usb connector but honestly since mine came out I’d always feel like I was playing on eggshells.

Personally I think hard wired is a good thing..you always need to have a cable anyhow .. I tended to forget mine alot and start asking around for Digital camera cables (as they are known by commoners:smiley: )

I’m pretty sure the Pad is pretty much the same as nanokontrol inside seems to be the weak point if the Nano Series though .. lots of people have this issue.

Why not test and solder everything back to its place? :slight_smile:

Same thing happened to my nanopad, and the nanokontrol. I just got a mate who knew what he was doing to solder it back on, works a charm :slight_smile:

Of course if its literally the joint thats just broken, simple to resolder it back.

If the damage is anything like mine though (and lots of other people) and it looks like on his Pad .. .theres nothing to solder back onto the track is gone!

Short extension cables from the pins on the USB connector to the next-in-line points would work though

dude seriously this happen to me

= Easy Solution , Buy another one from Guitar Center , open the both of them up , switch the back plastic plates so you have new serial number on your old one tell them it doesn’t work , get your money back , get a new nano pad…

and then buy some right angle usb cables for that thing in the future to avoid it breaking easier…

if you don’t feel like doing that , then whatever

haha, thats an awesome way to deal with that problem. only thing is, i don’t think anyone is selling a nanopad here in oslo anymore.

Think i will go with the one about soldering the cable straight onto the board. It’s a really good idea.

The USB-port of my midi-keyboard (Akai LPK-25), was ripped off when I dropped it from my table.. I guess the cable ripped it off. So my question is: is this fixable by soldering it together? If so, can anyone help me by telling what to solder and where.

The picture is kinda bad.

Its fixible ok.

You’ll need to follow where the tracks back to the next junction / component on the board and solder to that point seeing as theres no-where else left to do it.

You could either hard-wire a cable or hot-glue/solder in a usb connector and run cables from the back of it.. hard-wire like my old NanoKontrol above would be easier and probably more durable.

Just make sure to add some sort of strain prevention to the new cable!!! The newly soldered cable is now even more fragile than before (you now have a 6 foot cable attached simply by 4 tiny solder points). I don’t have a nano, but a simple knot in the cable on the inside of the case should do the trick assuming there is enough room inside.

Way too tight for a knot in there, and I’m not a fan of knots in cables .. a tight cable tie & some hot glue works a treat though.

Thanks for the advices. This will put my soldering skills to a real test.. but I guess I have nothing to lose.

I just spent 3 hours trying to solder it and just fucked everything up. maybe I don’t have the right equipment or am just retraded
