Help, need some technics info…

Hello,

I’m about to pick up a technics TT, but not shure if it’s a SL1200 (MK?)
The seller mailed me these pictures:

On the manual it states it’s a SL-D1, but that does not correspond with the pictures I can find on google…
Please let me know if this is the real deal.

Thanks !

The photo he sent you is definitely a 1200 MKII (in pretty damn good condition, too). Looks like the wrong manual. SL-D1 is a hi-fi separate turntable.

they ain’t 1200’s, they have a plastic chassis and no tonearm height adjustment… check google for the torque of the motor and whether ir is direct drive… if the torque is above 1.4 kg they should be okay, but if I were you I’d wait for real 1200’s

^^ Confused ^^

me to the tt in the picture is def a 1200 mk2

The pic is a a 1200 mk2, the pic I’m showing below is a d1 so he has the wrong manual.

Just make sure that the pic is the actual turntable he’s selling - it looks in DAMN GOOD condition, see if he will take a close up shot of the tonearm array for peace of mind, but strikes me its been “babied”.

edit the more I look at the pic he sent you, I think that turntable has only been used as a hifi turntable - there’s no usual wear around the pitch or buttons and the cartridge is not a “DJ” one.

Looks like 1200’s to me. The tone arm height adjustment looks to be there, just not a lot of detail in the photo.

Thanks guys !

Will keep you updated…

You might get a bargain if he thinks he’s got a SL-D1…

Cant see any tone-arm hieight adjustment, but the antiskate and pitchbend and 33/45 give it away to be a 1200

And id you look at the markings VERY closely and know what they look like they kinda spell out 1200MK2,

I would deffinately go for it

Where’s Xone when you need him?:joy:

Its 100% positive a 1200 Mk2, god knows I’ve been inside enough of them, and its in really good nick too - good luck with it.

And if anyone wants to triple check: http://www.turntabletech.com/history.htm

Thanks for posting fella’s !

Went to pick it up this morning (early :stuck_out_tongue:) because it was also offered on an local add-page and views were skyrocketing after a few hours. I already called them up yesterday (late) to confirm the buy, but you never know when another buyer sneeks in…

This was an obvious case of rich peepz not having a clue about their merchandise.
A nice lady welcomed me in their villa and showed me the turntable, and it was an SL1200 MKII alright

And what a gem !
All original, mint condition… with a dust cover and cell (philips 412).

Paid, took it with me and will post pictures and story-update tonight.
Happy days…

Victory is yours.

Hazah!!!

you scored man… good find!

I did good !

Hey all, thanks for posting…

Here is the full story…

When I saw the TT, I right away knew I had found some gold.
Just plugged it in, pitch @ 0 and strobe dots were stable.

That was enough for me, didn’t want to give the impression that I knew what to look for.
I paid and walked out with a BIG smile on my face.

Once I came home, I started to clean the TT & check everything.
There was some dust, but not much like the original pictures already showed.
The lady told me that it was not used much and it residented a warm & dry storage room the last 10 years (in a box with dust cover).

I checked all the cords (all orginal), pitch, strobe & pop-up light (working perfect), pitch (working perfect), dust cover in great condition and below the platter all looked like new. Same goes for the outside, mint/perfect condition ! Not one mark or blemish anywere…never seen this before. It could be a showroom-version… So not much to do, oiled the motor after reading the service manual, some cailube in the pitch fader and that is about it.

Three problems/to do’s detected:

  1. Pop-up lamp really pop’s out…I tought this should normaly go slow
  2. The cue lever is not working atm (I was able to press it down and tighten the screw so it can be used).
  3. Polish the dust cover to perfection

Then I did some research on the serial and what do you think ?
It’s a ‘stange’ one…

DA06 23C062

According to the SL1200 wiki, this means an early production units.
So a 1978 or 1979 version in mint condition, I don’t think these are very common.

Wiki states:

“DA22 17D142” and “MJ7821F287” are examples of serial numbers seen on early production units that both lacked mounting provisions for the internal “bottom base” (Technics part # SFAU122-02) and possessed a different style of dust cover hinges."

If some knows more about this (Xonetacular ?) I would love to hear it… it could be right tho, besides the faulty SL-D1 manual (because of early production maybe ?) it also had a manual for an Marantz 1060 amplifier (early 70’s) & Kenwood KT-8005 stereo tuner (1970’s) in the plastic sheet.

And now some pictures !

After I found those manuals, I called them again to see if they still had that Marantz or Kenwood..but the Kenwood died, no info about the 1060 yet. If that last one becomes available, I bet I can pick that up cheap (and will do so).

Thanks again for all the replies !

Ps. I paid 100 EU for the SL (luck of the Irish ? ;p)
Pss. My current setup is 2x HTD 4.5, 2x cdj2000, Xone 92r, TSP2 & audio 8, X1, Macbook Pro…so I don’t NEED it (pure GAS-behaviour).

100eu???

You lucky sob… :thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

I shouldn’t worry about the pop-up light too much. Re: polishing the lid - I did mine a couple of weeks back using window cleaner and a couple of micro fibre cloths . One to put the window cleaner on, and one to polish up the lids/remove the smears once dry. They came up likebrand new!!!

You didn’t NEED that ONE. But now you do NEED another to make the pair! Flog your old HTD 4.5’s and get a nice matching 1200MKII!

Better not show Xone this thread he will be gutted he missed such a deal

This was across the globe so no worries.

I’m still annoyed papo beat me out of a deal for a $300 pair of 1210s near me a few days ago, that’s what I get for posting about my craigslist flipping methods in detail on here.

Ouch lol, should charge him comission on using your techniques
