because im in california, i was lucky enough on my game dev jobs to get manditory time and a half and double time as its required by law here. but because of that reason, i literally made minimum wage on my first game dev job. seriously. so during crunch, yeah i made money. but i also slept at work 90% of the time for a year solid, had only 4 days off, and what money i made, i didnt have time to spend. i just ended up paying bills and helping my mom with it.

I also wanted to make a career in developing games, but it is one of the hardest and worst paid developer-jobs you can take.
The companies often justify it by saying :“They’ve got more fun at work”.

Not a fan. It probably works great for some, but I have a job which allows me to queue 100 tracks and play them while I work. Hard to beat that… the downside is when a shit track comes on (like now) I gotta find the browser and fast forward.
