I think I’m playing the Red Bull Academy…

My Friend dropped out of a genre mash-up competition and suggested me to them instead. It’s on Tuesday and I have 15 minutes to play at least three different genres. I do have a choice of equipment, so I’m hoping to use my 4 deck Traktor set up (Faderfoxes for now) which should ease the pain a bit. I’m so far out of my comfort zone it’s not even funny. I’m not a turntablist by any means but as a fall back the have Serato (which I’ve used a bit) and will take my Traktor timecodes in case.

I usually play between Progressive and Techno but I think this will need to be a bit breaksy so will play some of these tracks:

Prodigy - Smack my bitch up << opener
Kraftwerk - It’s more fun to compute
Shannon - Let the music play
Drummatic - Feelin Kinda Strange (Bass Kleph)
Joey Beltram - Energy Flash
Le Funk Mob - Motorbass Get Funked Up (Electrofunk)
Evil Nine - We have the energy (album version)
Cybotron - Clear
Klaxons - The bouncer (Gorky mix)
UNKLE - Reign (WoW mix)

Don’t think I can play all of them (Reign is 12 mins long, but damn it’s awesome) but some will just be looped as backing. I figure having a pool of music to use and just keeping it loose will work best.

Anyone want to weigh in? I want to get a good variation of recognisable and out there tracks.

/livejournal To top it off I have a blood test tomorrow and the day after this set is my work performance assessment at 10 am!

PS if anyone here is also in that compo, this track list is (c) copyright, 2010. :stuck_out_tongue:

PPS two more sleepless nights!

Oh yeah, I was going to end on the intro chatter from Sir Mix-a-lot - I Like Big Butts

just use
‘oh my god becky. look at THAT butt’

and thats it
or
‘oh my god becky. look at THAT butt[start echo] she looks like one of those rap guys girlfriends[echo freeze]’

Yeah, just the first sentence.

I would vote for more variety in that playlist. Maybe some rock or latin music too? It’s not exactly hard to mash up electro…

One of my personal favorites to mix:

Everybody Dance - Chic

I would also throw some latin or maybe classical in.

start on a classical piece, don’t worry too much about getting it properly gridded. then start a beat slicer on 8 beat loop mode and glitch up the sampled sound while bringing in a meaty breakbeat

I will see what I can find.

YES! I love how the beatslicer can provide texture where there isn’t one, this is a great way to start off with a really crazy intro.

Or jazz and start the slicer on a long horn bit.

keep in mind that serato and traktor use different frequencies for their timecode. your traktor timecodes will be useless as a backup!

Yeah, I know. I would guess they supply the Serato timecodes. I have asked for clarification on the limitations.

FYI, the event is Redbull Thre3style…

OK, they just confirmed no using MIDI controllers for FX. :disappointed:

UPDATE:

The gig went really well. I wasn’t as nervous as I thought I’d be. My set went pretty well. I think that even though there were about 150 people, it was pretty low key.

Great! Did you record it?

No sir but there should be photos! Yay!
