Like many of you I’m sure, I really like djtechtools.com and I think Ean and the team to a great job of useful and interesting articles. The site has a loyal fanbase which is growing fast, however I do think that there is so much more that can be done with the site and the community – and in true community spirit, the best way to find out what the best way to do it is to ask the readers themselves.
I saw they are looking for contributing writers which is cool as you can get loads of totally different angles and opinions on things. However I thought it might be a good idea to have a thread where we the readers make suggestions on the things we would like to see – in terms of ideas for upcoming articles, or even suggestions on a different way of doing things.
Here are a quick few suggestions of mine:
An Article on the Audio file quality: There are always heated debates on forums over the difference in quality between Vinyl, Wav’s, 320kbs Mp3’s and lower quality mp3’s and whether is makes a difference on a big club system etc. I like to hear a professional industry opinion.
An articles on Planning/Structuring a mix. Both for recording a mix at home and also playing live. Should probably be split into different genre’s as it hard to give a good overview for all different music styles since they are so different.
There are loads of fantastic Documentaries on Electroinic music and DJing, and their roots. “Pump Up the Volume” is one great one and there are others on the history of techno etc also. I think a list of these and where you can watch them online etc would be great.
Interviews with various DJ’s - their setup and why they use the gear that they do would be cool. Why certain pro’s use certain controllers etc – might be a good help to users like us.
Anyway that is just a few random ideas from me. Please add your own thoughts here and maybe Ean would take a look and let us know what he thinks and if he’s going to use any of the ideas
hearing from more djs from different genres would be awesome. i’d imagine that maybe it’s a bit difficult to get decent interviews, but i’m sure the djs would like the exposure as much as we’d like to hear what they say.
Cool ideas guys. I’m not sure of the traffic of the site but I think its over 250k per month - this is massive exposure and I’m sure dj’s would want to help out the site and get exposure for themselves.
Also interviews with hardware vendors and stories about what will be coming in the future would be great
Agreed. Give it one year and it will happen if I were to guess. They have the Scrach Pro and external mixer people covered. Now they need to satisfy the all in one customers.
Interviews with DJ’s would be awesome! Not only DJ’s who have already established a name for themselves but I think it would be cool to do like a weekly DJ spotlight with interview on up and comers who are breaking into the scene…Inspiration and motivation you know…
Also, if I was Ean, one thing I would do is create a really big comprehensive survey of the DJTT readers - and promote it and get loads of the readers to complete it so you could get a nice overall picture of the audience. Age, Location, Skill level, Music style, Experience, Setup Choice etc etc. Then tailor the articles appropriately. Use www.surverymonkey.com or something similar.
Create competitions like the Mixmag “10 minute mix” competition - it got great exposure/promotion for them and it could do the same for DJTT.
Also get readers to do a quick 5 minute review of the setup they have and explain why they like it and the advantages/disadvantages etc - put them all on a youtube channel.
Cool thanks Bento. That UserVoice site is great, but its not being used enough. I’m on this site all the time and I have been for months, and I never even knew about it. You should have a link on the main blog part, perhaps under the Contributing Writer link, have a few things like this down there…
