Ikea desk mods…

Hey all, I’m looking at buying a couple of Ikea pieces and sling them together to make a suarve desk for various equipment and future purchases!

I was thinking something along the lines of this…

It’s basically one of these on it’s side:

With this one on top:

However, I’m not sure if it’ll be high enough for my needs. As he has his TT’s in a flight case which obviously raises them up somewhat. I only have an Omni Control but plan on upgrading to the S4 and some Rokit 5 G2s too in the future. I’m 5"11 so I’m thinking it might be a bit too low for me?

Does anyone have any ideas or desks they’ve done themselves?

Could always raise it up with something under the desk top, i’d just stick some breeze blocks under there, but i’m lazy.

Haha, wouldn’t be too suave then I don’t think!

Anyone know how high is optimal height, or standard booth height?

Best height would be where you aren’t bending over to use the mixer and your controller… nothing worse than a sore back from mixing…

are you planning on storing shedloads of vinyl in it? If not:

I have one, its 90cm high and the perfect height for mixing. It holds 2 1210’s (battle position), lappy (on a stand), a reloop controller, x1 and lpd8 at a squeeze. No room for speakers though, so i mounted them on the wall with some free brackets.

If youre still intent on that one you proposed then you can buy little legs from ikea too that’ll raise it up to about 90 cm or higher. I cant remember the name of them though.

Seriously. I’m 6’4" so it’s always a problem for me hahaha :disappointed:

I would elevate the cabinet by setting them atop a few blocks. That way you raise to a good working height and provide yourself some toe space so you’re not kicking the faceplate while rocking out.

rough

You want whatever your mixing on to be at least at your bellybutton.

I used spacers from ikea to raise my desk up. I have a post in here SOMEWHERE with pics…ugh

Bed risers would work. not sure if Ikea sells them though.

You don’t need a few blocks.

All you need are Capita stands. Let me show ya.
This is what it used to be:

Here the primary idea on paper:

Ikea Hacktime, a package with contents (Ikea Expedit 2x2):

No rocketscience, just build it and they will come.

Attaching the last screws in ye olde Expedit

Here we go! This is what seperates the boys from the men! (I’m 6’0" and this is more than enough for me!)

Everything’s easy with the proper preparation.

And you can even add the velt to the Capita stands!

And this leads to the subtotal of:

The easy fabricated monitor and laptop stand will be replaced shortly with proper stuff… Just wait and see.

That’s impressive! How many of those capita stands do you think I’ll need for a 4x2 expedit? Also, is the cabinet you used the same height as the one I’m planning on using?

Thanks for everyone’s input!

Yeah that’s sweet, I use a pair of Bose 802s at the moment but I’ve finally sold them! Will get that:sunglasses:

I think you’d need 8, just to be on the safe side.
What I also recommend, is using some superglue to add as an extra adhesive to the screws used to set the Capita-stands in place.

You could also be really save and get a multiplex plate under the Expedit cabinet and screw the capita- stands to/through the multiplex plate.

The Expedit 4x2 has the same height as a 2x2.
In centimeters: 149cm x 79 cm x 39cm

Capita-stands comes in sizes.
Once again in centimeters:
11cm, 16cm or 21 cm

I have opted for the 11cm stands. This would give me roughly a height of 90cm. on which to put my gear on.

To put it all in perspective:
90cms is half of 180cm.

180cm is 6 feet, so 90 cm would be 3 feet.

Pics please!! this sounds good!!

Could see if I can find some time posting pics of some dutch buddies of mine.

i LOVE this!!! the effort we go through to get our set up in position!!

in my last place i built a deck stand out of MDF and made it so that the decks and mixer were sunk into the worktop!!! The pride i felt when it was complete!! wish id kept some pics.

What you planning for the laptop and monitor?

Well, I’m going to try and add an Ikea Lack plate to the top, as that I can let my mixer sink it’s position as to the position-height of the MIDIcontrollers.

I want to see if I can find laptop stands that I can conveniently fit under the cut up Lack plate.
I might have found one that might suffice:

I like it!! Has the potential to look really sweet!!! Especially with that stand. look forward to seeing that. Think you are right to sink the mixer.
