Is it worth installing Pro-Tools?

Currently using Ableton on my macbook pro for producing and I’m thinking about sticking Pro-Tools on there too (I already own a copy with MBox 2 - I used it on a previous PC).

Could any Pro-Tools users out there advise:

  1. Is it worth me installing it?
  2. Is it better to mixdown and master in Pro-Tools than Ableton?
  3. Is the main advantage the ability to record an external source?
  4. Will it clash with my soundcard?

Many thanks!

Whatever you can do in Pro Tools you can do in Ableton

Just sayin’

What’s wrong with Live?

Stick with 1 DAW, mate. Learn in and love it.

I thought that you couldn’t record an external source (ie a vocalist) using Ableton?

I agree with this! I started on Cubase and Reason, moved to Pro-Tools to get some experience with it, then Ableton because I wanted to use it for gigs. Wish I had stuck with Cubase in a way!

Nothing wrong with Live but I’m sure I’ve heard people say Pro-Tools is the best for mixing/mastering…hence the question really. Also I thought Ableton can’t record external sources?

Ableton can record external sources, unless you have one of the cut down versions that comes with some hardware perhaps. Not sure if it’s disabled in those or not.

ProTools is very straight forward audio DAW. It has a lot of things going for it, and some people need to learn it to interface with larger studios. But if you’re already into Live and it’s working for you, might as well stick with it like most people say. I’m all for learning new gear, but you need to prioritize your time sometimes too.

I haven’t done it, but I don’t see why you can’t have the mic plugged into your audio interface, which is connected to your computer and create an audio track in Ableton, set the input to “Ext. In”, arm track, record, boom?
