You are missing the point. Its not anyone particular that has to do it. The point is someone who does have the time, who does care (it can be a commercial enterprise as well) can do this work. However if you are a Live user, you can drop in the results and keep doing what you are doing, just better.
Like I said earlier, lots of people are fine with the limits their environments defines. However with M4L there is a way for people who are not content with a specific limitation to push the bounds and stay with Live instead of having to spend lots more time looking and learning a tool that doesnt have the given limitation.
No I understand completely and if a third party does create a DJ interface patch for m4l that competes with Traktor I’ll be all for it, but until then my opinion is “i’ll believe it when I see it”.
For the time being it sounds like a lot of hooplah for something that isn’t much different from Native Instrument’s Reaktor; which also affords it’s users a world of possibilites but the reality is it’s often times a bigger pain in the ass than most musicians can be bothered with.
HI don’t really wanna start more flames but In some way with Reaktor you’ve got a bit of the Max 4 Live flavour already, and still it didn’t take the world by storm.. In fact a lot of freeware is sketched on this, so is some of NI’s own stuff (take Tim E. “The finger” 4 example).
Sure most of us in this forum are very geeky but most people won’t even get close to it!?
Sure reaktor is expensive and not so wide spread as live, but I thing most of us have these card to close to our chests to really see the big pic.
In the grand scheme of things IMHO m4l will bring a lot of new little nifty small Live micro-apps.. specially cause it’s going to have a micro-“ecosystem” of developers.. but how many really method/ life changing apps have we seen in the last 2-3 years? I would guess not so many… (new melodyne is the most revolutionary thing to come up in the last few years IMHO).
Being in contact with the “regular DJ JOE” makes me realise all this new possibilities are to most people to confusing and mind bending (and I don’t mean things in a good way).. to many choices… most people want standard, safety and stable envoirments ..
only us geeks really seek new different approaches!

PS - You can already route traktor thru Live and do a world of new stuff BUT how many people already do it as they’re day-2-day setup??
let’s not forget that endless possibilities and freedom are not necessarily synonymous with great creativity.
i think it’s safe to say that more often than not, true creativity comes out of an environment with certain restrictions and some limitations as it forces the artist to make the best of the tools he has and can focus on WHAT he/she’s creating instead of HOW he/she is creating.
For instance with controllerism, admittedly it’s a relatively new way for DJs to express themselves and gives the DJ more freedom that they ever could have previously imagined… But who is really pushing the boundaries with it, there aren’t any controllerists I can think of who draw large crowds with their work. The most well known controllerists like Muldover for example still have very modest reputations and appeal to a very small niche in comparison to guys like Z-Trip who work with comparably limited tools.
Yeah, I do see one big stumbling block as well right now. Max 4 Live hacks only work for people that also have Max 4 Live. Since its an additional 299 USD on top of Live 8 (not even included in the Suite), it means that for now it will only be hackers supplying hacks for other hackers.
Clever use of hotcue/ loops/ beatmasher might just do what you need with a lot headscratching to get a really practical controller mapping just for that function
