First of all sorry for my really bad eanglish.
I’m using ableton and torq with MacOS. Now its time for me to purchase a laptop, it should be mac, but I dont know wich one is better for using outdoor for dj’in: Macbook is light n portable but with slower cpu, MBP is much more powerfull (is it?) but it takes a lot of place and hevier.
Thank for your replyes ).
the MB has the 2.4 ghz which is the same processor that the 15" MBP runs. All the Mac laptop start with 2 gigs of ram exp the the MBP 17" which starts with 4 GB and goes all the way to 8 GB. The 17" does have an extra usb port.
im comparing 13 inch macbook with 15 inch MBP. is it worth ~ 0.4 ghz for less comfort? (aluminium ones). Amount of RAM and HDD is not actual thing Im loocking at (already bought’ em for upgrade)
nope! now going from 2.0 to 2.93 you would see the difference. if you going for a 13" vs 15"…its boils down to screen size. They are almost mirror images of eachother.
DIY!..clone the hard disk, remove the battery, pull the hd, slap in the new one, have a smoke & call it a day…total time about 15 min to open and replace & to clone, well thats depends on what prog u use.
i work in IT and my flat is loaded with mobo’s HDD’s and tonns of other stuff (be shure, my wife gonna kill me ) ). Usually i make clones with norton GHOST, dissasembling laptops is not a problem for me (there was one with air).
So conclusion is : 13’’ is better of its little sizes
thank yall)
if you do not care for the firewire port i also do not see much of a reason to go with the macbook pro. the extra screen space might be nice, but the additional weight and size is a minus, especially if you are lugging things around without a car.
about the cpu, the top of the line mbp’s not only come with higher frequency, they also feature more L2 cache, which can make a big difference. the other thing is, they come with a dedicated graphic card along with the same integrated graphik card as on the mb’s. today this doesnt make a difference for a DJ, however when snow leopard comes out, it will feature grand central, which will make it brain dead easy for developers to use one of the idle graphic cores for heavy number crunching. so down the line you might see music software leveraging this. then again, in my current 2 deck experimenting, i havent really felt like i was hitting any limits on my 2 year old mbp or my 6 month old mb white.
no firewire port (this is a big one if you plan buying a firewire mixer or soundcard; most of the good ones need a firewire port)
smaller screen size
MBP advantages:
bigger screen size
firewire port
MBP disadvantages:
heavier
more expensive
It’s all about what you want to use it for: If you do not care about screen size and about the firewire port go for the MB. If you want a bigger screen or firewire port and you have the cash, buy the MBP.
I don’t think the CPU power makes any difference today if you plan to use it for standard mixing; any computer can handle that easily. If you plan to use Ableton with lots of effects, than maybe you should think about the CPU. Otherwise it doesn’t matter.
Another alternative would be an old MB. It has a firewire port and it is very cheap. I have seen many DJs using the old MB.
is the MBP really that much heavier? and i think heavy is relative in this situation..compared to a lot of other laptops, they’re still extremely light. all my friends who have other laptops are always like “holy [insert random explicative], this thing is light!” when they pick up my MBP.
I generally don’t understand why you’d go for a MacBook rather thant the MacBook White being sold; it’s basically same spec’d and has the firewire-port, which makes it perfect for djing.
