Calvin Harris is no Mark Farina, but this is still pretty hilarious. This is why Vegas will never become the next Ibiza- even pop house isn’t mainstream enough. Calvin Haris might be one of the last people I would expect to have to worry about getting booted.
I wonder how many top flight DJs are redoing their contracts to state “X$ for 4 hours, but if I get asked to leave the decks it’s a X$ + Y% of X”.
This is nothing more than a huge waste of time and inconvenience for the DJ’s and the promoters should get taxed for it if they think they can make more money by NOT having the DJ play.
To play devils advocate — the stance generally is “promoters should know what type of music they are booking when they book guys like Ferrer, Calvin Harris, etc.”
Does this mean superstar DJ’s are immune from having to read a crowd and play a set that caters to who they have been hired to entertain. The advice of “if you are not prepared to play the gig you took then don’t take it” is given to every noob DJ on this site asking about music. Why should these guys be any different. He accepted a gig in Vegas to play for a diverse crowd – maybe he should’ve had some hip-hop with him.
Till recently Calvin Harris was a guy who would perform his songs live, singing them so I don’t think Calvin Harris was counted as a DJ that has super skills on mixing like no other so your reply is not relevant with the situation. Most of the big name’ that will play in the clubs are there for their production not for their dj skills.
I think it is generally recognized if you book someone with a name that has been made, that you are going to get that style of music when you book them. I wouldn’t expect nor want to go to see LTJ Bukem and hear him play Top 40.
my point exactly. So if they take a gig at a place that has a diverse crowd and some people will want to listen to hip-hop at some point and they can not offer that, they shouldn’t take the gig.
you make a good point but i think theres a little more to it though.
calvin harris’ gigs are very different from ours. when your average joe dj plays, 99% of the club is not there for them. when some one like calvin harris plays, the majority of the club is likely there to see him. he shouldn’t necessarily have to bring hip hop because he doesn’t produce hip hop, and people are there for his style of music
^ Yeah I understand that completely. That really is how things “should” work — but also thinking about Vegas being such a revolving door of tourist there to party, many of them are also not locals that wait for their favorite artists to come into town. It’s a diverse crowd of party goers and Vegas is not the “House Music” capitol of the world, this wasn’t Ultra or WMC week in Miami. It’s Tryst in Vegas. I’m sure he was killing it — he’s a big name especially at the moment with tons of mainstream hits.
But we’re quick to slam the promoter for asking him to play hip hop as if Hip-Hop is taboo and something horrible to play. It’s not.
there’s a difference between a “Touring” DJ and a “Working” DJ. They obviously reached out to him to come play their venue, not the other way around. He’s not playing at the local hot spot where people are just out to be seen and could care less about the DJ as long as he’s playing all the tunes they know and hear on the radio and at ever other local club.
But a “Touring” DJ is completely different. He’s there because of what and how he plays, and that’s mainly why the crowd is there. Sure he can have a variety of tunes to control the “energy” of the crowd and read them that way. But to expect him to change the music completely?
That’s like booking a country band and being mad at them for not playing alternative, grunge rock stuff.
Disgusting if i was from Vegas i would feel disgraced by my city’s nightclubs. Calvin Harris has tracks on the commercial charts all the time why isn’t that enough?
