Need help writing DJ intro/drop

What’s up DJTT? I’m having a hell of a time coming up with a memorable DJ drop, you know like (horrible example but) “DJ Pauly D, makin the ladies panties drop” — something that will stick and have maybe a ring to it?

Any ideas?

my friends name is DJ Tim John Ill and he just drops a song and about 10 seconds into it he drops a chopped robot voice just saying the name and it sounds killer. other then that, just brainstorm, write everything you think of down. ill think about it and repost

Stupid question, but do you really need this? It’s sounds kinda cheesy IMO

+1
the last thing i want to hear when listening to a good mixtape that i like is a name drop every 4 minutes.
maybe just as an introduction for the mix.

man that sh!ts me too!

I’m actually trying to sort this for my new name - good jobs there’s a shedload of Sherlock Holmes stuff kicking about.

Got some belters from the old 1940’s radio plays

I agree with e_p (omg rhyme!)

i know what you guys are thinking, oh great, heres another one of those tool DJs that drops his name every 30 seconds… thats not at all what i want, i just want a little intro that i can maybe play at the start of a set…

with that being said, anybody have any ideas?

“Be-ne-dek, making the ladies panties drop!”

lol, fistpump?

Yeah I agree with earl panda and others, don’t bother with name drops. Even at the beginning of a mix tape it makes me want to stop listening. Just focus on developing your own style; if you want to throw something unique in so people recognize who you are from hearing the tape, go with what sherlock said above – find some crazy samples of old shit that you connect with thematically or something and use that. Some people say you need name drops so other djs don’t bite your mixtapes and put their names on them but seriously you need bigger things to worry about.

are you talking about the minute long intros that the big trance guys use to let peoples ears relax and allow them to build up after the last guy peaked or over cooked the warm up?

As for name drops, in mixes they can sound stuck on, but in a busy night club where there’s
6 names on the bill they can be a useful way to let people know you’ve just come on,
but use it once during a very minimal part of your first track, ie the lead in.
avoid big pad noises and bass booms, and keep it short, just your name, no speeel about fanny wobbling.
(not the US fanny , but the europe meaning of the word)

Nothing wrong with name drops/personal intro’s. Dunno why everyone is instantly assuming you’re going to be playing it every 30 seconds. Pretty much every mainstream DJ will have a personal soundbyte. I can think of like 10 badass DJ’s right off the top of my head that use personal name drops… they gotta be doing something right to be flying all over the world making bank.

Why don’t you just say your name and put some fx on it? Maybe record a short five second or so juggle routine with your name.

Could you tell me were i could get my hands some of these??

Please and Thanks

you wouldnt be a dj if you didnt like to dig. digest media from another era, i suggest old scifi movies

Fruity Loops has an awesome text to speech plug in. It’s a shame it’s not available as a VST.

Thanks oh i must say i have never tried diggin haha

yea, i mean, idk, i just thought it might be something cool to add to my arsenal… ya know?

Teh internets. Seriously there’s a ton of stuff out there, google search filetype:mp3 or wav and go nuts. http://www.archive.org is a good place for lots of free audio and video, and there’s a whole sample database on Free sound samples - OLPC though it’s not just voices or stuff. Old movies are a great source of stuff. Personally I love digging for old spoken word vinyl as well as novelty records and such so I have a whole shelf of stuff (most of which I’ll probably never get around to using). Comedians, politicians, demonstration and education records, etc. Go through old videos and stuff too – amazon is a gold mine (e.g. stuff like this looks fun [ame]Amazon.com). Use your imagination … you’d be amazed how much stuff there is worth sampling out there once you start listening for it
