PA Speaker Selections

PA Speaker Selections

What kind of speakers would people recommend for just playing house parties. I don’t have a huge budget but Ive seen a bunch of different more affordable setups. One Ive seen is the Tapco thumps which Ive demoed as a friend has a set of them. Ive also seen ones by Technical Pro, does anyone have any experience with this brand? Let me know some recommendations if you have anything to offer on say under $1000 for a pair. Thanks for looking

I forgot to add id like to get self powered speakers/..

how much technical experience do you have?

I’m in the process of building some Bill Fitz maurice Cabs, working on the Tuba 30’s right now (cause I have some alright tops). Plan to couple them with some Omni tops later when I get funds. I plan on building two tubas for around 375-400… and grabbing a crown xti 1000 or xls 1500.

I’ve got a pair of the thumps myself, they are amazing! cheap and sound just like the more expensive mackies! get those, you wont regret it!

ahhh, gotcha. lots of people like to go self powered. Idk, I like externally powered speakers myself. They are usually lighter, and you get more control of the volume while in the booth.

whatever you do… do not get behringer b2-15’s… they have NO BASS… AT ALL

I dunno what type of music your are playing, and I havnt used these myself, but the B52 matrix systems are said to be good for mobile djs (and I assume house parties)

Now, if you are playing something like, dubstep or DnB I would want something with moar bass (by more, I mean, better low end frequency response)

if you weregoing to be playing some dubstep i’d just pick up 2 of the cheaper loudspeakers and one beefy sub.. cuz i personally think dubstep sounds like dogcrap without loud sexy wobbly bass

well yeah, definitely, but the thing about dubstep is that, frequency wise, it goes much lower, than almost any other genre. The kicks are pretty high, but you can have sub basslines reaching down as far as 20 hz.

Generally, we percieve that “low powerful bass” when we hear things around 60-90 hz. Most genres just boost this to get people to go bananas. however, most dubstep producers are like, fuck that, we want to liquify some organs, I dont care if they can hear it very well.

all of this is based of my opinions of the genre, which I’m honestly not very versed in. I do frequency analysis in my spare time, for fun haha.

haha i was about to say.. can the human ear even hear 20 hz???

and for that matter… will a PA Speaker (not sub) even hit near the range of 20hz?

and since we’re on the topic… is there anywhere to buy oem subs or anything of the sort… so i can build my own cabinet??

yeah. some guys I know swear they have songs that go down to 15 hz. on a variety of headphones i’ve tested, I’ve found my ears go down to like, 16ish (its either that or the headphones cant go that low). Thats like, actual sustained note though, not just driver rattle.

A pa speaker cant go anywhere near that low, and most subs cant either. It takes some serious equipment to accuratly make frequencies that low. If you check out the link in my first post, you will find some superb plans for DIY subs and PA speakers. the plans are 15 each, which isnt terrible, and the cabs are amazing (my friends tuba 36 literally almost made me shit myself). All of the details as far as purchasing the parts are in the plans.

Sorry for the hijack funkeejunkee. I hope you can find some affordable PA speakers (and trust me, you want to grab a sub. The bump is what get the ladies hahaha).

its a cheapy harbinger… its seriously more impressive than the specs show… at least compared to some behringer b2-15a’s … they have some pretty nice bass.. and to be honest bass comparable to some jbl’s i’ve gotten to play around with… and if you just picked up two of those.. you’d have 500$ to throw on a sub

and as far as those cabinets go.. i was look at alot of those from the link.. i was curious where to get stuff like that… there’s some cerwin vega cabinets at the club i spin at… and they got me shittin my pants.. the chair i sometimes sit on in my booth rattles the shit out of my ass and gets me going all kinds of crazy.. haha

well seriously youre going to have a hard time to find a portable and loud sub that plays down to 20 hz if you include cheap into that equation Ide say it’s a mission impossible.

Most portable PA systems use large woofers in small bass reflex cabinets. This means that they are usually “tuned” to a relatively high frequency ie: the construction will boost the bass to a cutoff point below which the db levels will fall dramatically and the speaker will quickly run into a resonance at which it won’t put out considerable levels but sound like shit and easily destruct itself too. Some of it can be coped with by amps with an active bass boost, but if youre not very carefull with it youre risking to blow the bass quite easily since physics doesn’t like to be messed with.

don`t expect it to go much lower than around 60 for the top speakers and maybe 40-50 for the subs, on the other hand most clubs don’t get any lower either, so most people won’t notice. BTW I wouldn’t expect that many persons have a THX certified subwoofer as a dj monitor at home, so most djs won’t notice too

well from the sounds of it .. its just for mobile dj’ing.. and i’m sure any 500$ sub will work fine for events such as small venue’s, house parties and what not…

i would say for the most part.. the average person in a club just wants bass they can actually feel

hahaha… yeah man. No way you find a sub that goes to 20 hz on a budget. For house parties, it wont be a problem really, Kicks dont go down to 20 hz, and thats what most people think bass is.

When he asked for a PA, I assumed he meant he wanted a sub as well (I know I used think PA meant tops and bots).

and yeah, dj’s dont need crazy ass home theater setups. But, “I like the bass. I like the girls, but I digress.”

Btw, guitar center has a sale this weekend.

that is forever going to be a bitchin’ quote… nice one.. haha

LOLz…

If you were living in the Netherlands, I would offer you my Peavey set + poweramp.
(Peavey Eurosys 1PM + Eurosys 1M + XR400b + cables)

The lot would go for a price that I would be able to get me a Xone22 or a decent secondhand Ecler Nuo 4.

I’ve shredded a few nice subs at 40-50 hz, gotta watch out!

+1 on the B52 Matrix series. You can get the Matrix1000 for under a grand, and that will be big enough for house parties. Great sound, super easy to move/set up, and expandable. I’ve used the 2000 in big banquet halls and outside, and I’ve seen the 1000 used in decent sized clubs and bars.

Careful with mixing subs and house parties. You don’t want cops.

A pair of tapco thumps are not only dirt cheap but have a reasonable amount of bass considering they’re just tops. Plus they’re stupid lightweight and portable. The alternative with your budget is a matrix b-52, which is more expensive but includes a sub.

You should check craigslist man. You can get some nice stuff for cheap. I managed to get 2 electorvoices, 2 18’s and an amp for $700. Definitely enough for a serious house party.

yo sine, ha. I always though it was “I like the bass, I like the grooves” I stand corrected.
