Ive decided to actually start critiquing these setups, based on absolutely no personal credibility whatsoever, and the boredom of having seen a million pictures of a midi controller near a laptop. My tongue is firmly in cheek, but yell at me if you want as well, im here to help.
Gear - OK.
Ergonomics - Terrible. Your elbows and wrists will hate you. No proper height or reach in either sitting or standing.
Dopeness of setup - boooring. No colour or flair, no effort in making an interesting workstation to be at. Cant you draw at least one cock and balls on the table for some visual interest?
Sound - Terrible. Are those speakers a joke? Youve got a couple of grand worth of gear, and listening to it on speakers I wouldnt listen to AM radio on. Your priorities are wack, i say wack son.
Laptop - At least its off to the side.
Final Score 2/10. If you had just said your setup was a bunch of controllers and a laptop, then the console i would have pictured in my mind would have been more exciting than your actual setup.
but i did this pic at my home that is an aparment and since my neighbors are very old people i can’t use my couples of monitors. They call the police 3 month ago and i was playing at a time that is permitted by law…due to this fact when i’ve to “try” some tracks i’ve two choice: 1) use this 2.1 that give me a minimum sound or, secondly, take my car, and going to my soundproof studio where i’ve pairs of KRK Rookit 8 and Yamaha HS80M…
i’ve only a laptop stand and decided, for the pic, to use it for the Push… in clubs i use one of the cdj 2000s stand for my mac… basically, i don’t need to put my mac in a special position since i’ve mapped all the functions in my Xone K2s and i don’t need to use my laptop during my set. i don’t use the keyboard as i have my music well organized in small playlists. This system let me to find very fast any tracks i want in that moment. finally, i prefer to put the mac alone to the side because i want see the dancefloor in front of me and not see the screen of the mac as i’m not responding to emails. for this fact, also when i practice, i try reproduce this situation.
it was a boring sunday, put my gear on the table and did the pic. stop.
i play in clubs, my bedroom is for sleeping… give your bedroom the appearance of a club does not make you a DJ…
My setup is VERY similar except that I’m running an X1 and a custom mapped F1 instead of two K2s. How do you have your K2s mapped? I’d be tempted to switch to them just to lose the usb hub and clean up the setup a little more
The two k2s are mapped really similiar to an X1 mk1 except for the part over the fader where i mapped the Fx 1/2 for the k2 that control A/B decks; Fx 3/4 for the k2 that control C+D decks…finally a very deep loop section… there are loop, move, seek position, move grid…
I did the video on youtube where i show the mapping but is in italian… if you are interested let me know and i’ll do a pdf file to explain the mapping.
P.S : the convenience of being able to cascade through the Xlink port the two K2 is unmatched.
Would be totally down to see a pdf of your mapping if it’s not too much trouble. The only thing is that I feel there are too many controls for me on the k2 since I use the db2 for FX so pretty much all the knobs would go unused sadly. Would still love to see how you have them mapped as I might look at switching in a few months
I don’t think he meant to offend you and while it did come off harsh he did mention he has no room to talk… That being said… I absolutely hate mixing hunched over… At 6’4 I always struggle with finding an optimal height and I purchased a corner desk to put my controller on and it has a printer top attached to it where a printer would go and that is almost at my elbows and has been far the best I have found even most booths I find aren’t even optimal… But besides the point gear wise great but have to agree ergonomics do not make sense to me…
Sound wise I agree a cheap paid of monitors would be far superior and could be run without neighbor interference.
But with that being said I myself have monitors but do not ever use them when mixing as normally I only mix later at night and have two young children and a wife…
I agree with you. But after I spend about 1000€ for 2 pairs of monitors in my studio i don’t want spend more money for my bedroom where I spend about 5 minutes per day since I’m always in studio…
So I bought this small 2.1 on sales for 64€ that I use when I have to “try” some tracks just not having to take my car and be forced to go into the studio..
Oh I go understand that… I use cheap m- audio monitors I picked up for cheap on sale… It beats having to setup my live rig with to really hear how shit performs… Of course then come down to how do you properly setup a 5k watt system in a 700sqft room without making you go deaf
