Hey everyone ever since hearing Duck Sauce and few other great disco funk style tracks i’ve been obsessed. I’ve been having trouble finding a consistent set of tracks that would fit with Duck Sauce. So I was wondering what your guys recommendations would be for disco and funk tracks.
The Ultimate DJ Breaks collection (25 double vinyls I think) is a great place to start. There are a bunch of breaks collections available in hip-hop record stores that will introduce you to some great old funk. But if you really want to know your shit and not just the stuff that gets sampled by hip hop artists, read Tim Lawrence’s book “Love Saves the Day” and get every record mentioned there
Too Hot to Stop - The Bar-Kays
Boogie Slyde - Wizardz
Car Wash = Rose Royce
Gangster with an A - Old Money
Chillin’ - Modjo
Holy Ghost - Bar-Kays
N.I.C.E. - Alan Wilkis
Stayin Alive - Bee Gees
Let it Whip - Dazz Band
The edits by MrK collection the Diana Ross is from mentioned above is a belter.
(managed to see him play easter sunday at Melting Pot - what a night!)
For modern stuff check out stuff by TheRevenge, 6th Borough project - the Instruments of Rapture 12’s are now out on Digital at Juno. If you go to the curious people soundcloud page and look at the tracklisting for the discosnare mixes.
err, tensnake, faze action, ltj xperience, duff disco, mark e, eddie c all making great stuff on the disco tip.
Ah man i saw Danny Krivit a few times in Manchester a few years back. Legend.
But your mention of The Revenge got me thinking of this Marvin Gaye edit.
BTW- everything in your list is what i play at the weekends. I think we may read off the same hymn list man.
if that’s the stuff you play out karlos then you’re obviously a man of taste! I’m only learning - so it doesn’t get played outside my kitchen/ipod at the moment.
OT - doing a course for work that needs to be done for end of June. So hopefully get some mixing time in after that. At which point i’ll post some mixes of this sort of stuff for critisicm from you guys…
