I would like to start djing with Traktor Pro 2 using a controller and a mixer. I will start out using an old keyboard as the controller, and I will be mapping it so it fits my needs. The question is what mixer will I need to control Traktor? I quess you can’t just buy any cheap mixer and somehow connect it?
I’m very low on money, so a cheap solution is what I prefer
If you want to use a traditional analogue DJ mixer you don’t need anything special at all. All you need is any old mixer (preferably with 3 band EQ! such as the entry level numark m2 mixer) and a sound card with at least 2 stereo outputs (such as the super popular, high quality and cheap as chips NI Audio 2 sound card). Then you connect each stereo output of your sound card to one of the LINE inputs on the back of your mixer and you’re good to go.
You can then get a midi controller to control your transport controls but to be honest that’s not even needed. You can just map the play + pause + loop etc buttons to buttons on your computer keyboard to start with. If you already have a midi keyboard as you sorta suggested that will work fine. Ean Golden used to DJ with just a midi keyboard and a DJ mixer back in the day. (mixer + midi keyboard is certainly what I would use if I wasn’t into turntables)
ALTERNATIVELY you could get a midi controller that is in the style of a mixer but I’m not really a fan of those so I won’t get into it.
Hope that helps. if you have any questions just ask.
the only difference between tp2 and tsp2 is timecode control. You can still output decks out of separate channels into a mixer. Thats what I do and I’ve got tp2
Silly question maybe, and a solution I’ve put here on a few of these types of questions, but why not just buy the cheaply priced Behringer DDM4000 mixer?
Has MIDI and is a standard mixer, so can be your mixer and controller in one. Just leave two channels as they are and map the rest to Traktor using MIDI. Then, with something like an Audio2DJ, run both decks to mix externally into the 2 standard channels on the DDM4000. Then, you can use the mixers controls and effects, as well as all the other parts of the mixer to control Traktor.
Always a solution to consider for anyone looking for a cheap way to get a mixer + controller setup.
Thanks for your suggestion, an excellent solution, but I think I’ll stick to the setup mentioned earlier in the thread. I don’t find the DDM4000 mixer cheap, as I’m still just doing this for fun and to test my actual interest in DJing.
@Hoodless: A nice idea, but as I live in Denmark the cost of shipping is pretty high when I buy from Ebay, cause there are none sellers on the Danish edition.
But I found another Behringer mixer: http://www.thomann.de/dk/behringer_djx_750.htm Crap, or should I give it a go?
DJX750 is ok for beginner level. But if you stick to DJing, you’ll soon outgrow it and realise it’s limits.
All in all, regarded as a bit of a crap mixer. The DDM4000 is an exception from Behringer, with most of their other stuff, bar one or two other exceptions, seen as cheap and crap.
Their new NOX606 from them looks interesting though!
