signs that your digital music is amateur

signs that your digital music is amateur

ive read a thread about signs that your digital music is amateur. but somehow the site is no longer up.

can you help me come up with the list? anyone?

Why would you want that?

(Similar like the sporting “rollerblading sucks” stickers on your rollerblades?)

Forgetting to turn the bass knob back up on the track your mixing into… the track drops… but theres no bass its quite anticlimatic and sounds rather terrible !

@Tekki i think he would like to know what things to avoid in particular.

Im sure everyone here can come up with tons of things.

there are these laptop musicians here in my area. who have been, should i say, cheating when they make music, the community somehow adores them. i’m not jealous or anything, i’m just angry how they fooled the community. i just want to put a stop to it by letting them know that somebody in the crowd knows what they are doing, and i also want to educate he community.

or maybe it’s just me

As long as in the end of the day everyones enjoying the music and having fun - id worry more about your own sets rather than picking at other peoples.

What will educate people is getting up there and dabling in a bit of tasteful controllerism, you actions will speak far more than words can

I guess what i am really trying to say is that you shouldnt do anything thats going to lead to a fight because that doesnt do the scene any justice - try to be as tactful as possible.

How exactly are these guys cheating ?
Everyone definition of cheating is nowadays different, it used to be if you were using dat tapes you were a cheater, oh how times have changed :stuck_out_tongue:

What is cheating?

I mean, yeah there are some that are plain lazy, but they still manage to entertain the crowd.
And isn’t that what being a DJ is all about. Reading the crowd, knowiing what they want to hear, and entertain the hell out of 'em?

It’s not the way they do it, it’s more important that they do it.
(Otherwise you could go on hating Pete Tong/Sasha etc, while they do a standout job)

try searching the thread “top 10 signs your track is amateur for electronic music” in google or something and you would surely see something from emusictips.com. it’s just that the site is not up anymore.

but yeah, you guys are right. i couldn’t define what cheating is as well.
and they play music like they were reading their emails but they still get great reviews.

Try Luke Vibert, the guy is behind his laptop, and only in his laptop, but still… The crowd has a blast.

all the time :open_mouth:

Yeah I’ve found that no matter what, it’s the crowd that is the judge and they don’t always know anything about anything (they can be idiots). I was at this one club for this one DJ everyone raved about and this guy spent his whole 2hr set playing 30 seconds or less of each track. It was insane yet everyone was lovin’ it!

It’s really a subjective topic - ‘what is good’ but I dunno. And I’ve experienced this as a DJ myself. I would play tunes I thought were bangers to look up and people were exiting, but I play and old school jam and people were getting all crazy. It really comes down to rockin’ the crowd i guess…

Heh, i’ve seen SOOO many laptop bands it’s ridiculous. Some are exceptional live

(when they still had the legendary paul toohill in the band)
And a few other bands I could list out (we have some AMAZING electronic bands on stage in our scene)

But we also sport some of the WORST. I wont name names…but seriously…get off your gmail acocunt and play some music.

Musically I think it’s very easy to tell if your music is amateur or professional yourself. Just compare it to other acts that you like and have your friends compare it and see where you stand.

Live, though, is a completely different beast. There are so many factors to a live show that can make it legendary or completely terrible. My big thing is I want to see things happening. I want to see what something on stage. That could mean actually playing instruments, running around and breaking things (a la Terrorfakt), great visual additives to the show, anything, really.

Oh, and if the live show sounds just like the album I get bored really quickly. But this is the difference, to me, between a producer/DJ doing original material and a band. But that’s a different debate.

although…

if you’re not strategically using sub-bass in at LEAST the kick drum?
You might be an amateur.

If you produce EVERY song in A minor?
You might be an amateur.

If your version of mastering is to…turn it up.
You might be an amateur.

aaaand finally…

If you use the Vanguard…
You might be an amateur.

I think it might be fair to say if you ONLY use the Vanguard…

just like if you ONLY use Virus presets

I didn’t say you ARE an amateur. i said you MIGHT be an amateur.

and i refuse to use the vanguard as a result of it’s overuse.

Ah, fair enough. Semantics wins again

it was also kinda designed to be tongue-in-cheek. come on! lol

I’ll get my coat.

Fus

Oh I know, I was laughing and all. I always forget to use emotes :stuck_out_tongue:
