You’re in your car on the other side of town listening to the radio and all of a sudden you get the BEST EVER idea for a song, you can hear it playing in your head and you can imagine a crowd or a club going absolutely insane to your track, but the problem is it’s only in your head right now.
You can perfectly hear all of the kicks, synths, hats, vocals and bass working perfectly smoothly in your head, but you want to get it down and make it into a track, and not just any track, but the track IN YOUR HEAD.
So how do you go about remembering this tune between the time you imagine it and the time you’re sitting in your studio with your DAW open and putting it together? Is it possible? Do you have any techniques?
I get this often. I tend to use the voice recorder on my HTC Desire HD and hum, whistle, whatever the melody, parts etc onto it. I also use uLoops on my phone to write beat loops etc that I think of whilst out and about. By no means a sub for Ableton or Reason, but does the job to trigger my memory on what I was thinking.
I don’t have a fancy recording thing on my cheap phone, so I just use the basic voice recorder on it to hum out a melody. Or, sometimes just speak into it to try remind myself later what I was thinking of.
Usually nothing. I hear great tunes in my head all the time, and it’s not too hard to think up something catchy. What you’re describing is inspiration, and it lasts only until the moment you load up your daw and realize how much work it’ll take to recreate what you want to hear. I find it easier to start with no idea in particular, just making patches and experimenting with weird processing chains until I inadvertently get an idea of what to play with one.
recording your voice as a synth for the main instruments. it’s mainly lead basslines and stuff that comes to my mind out of nothing and i feel like it’s kinda obvious which drums fits. i also have a million great fills and buildups in my mind, but since i dont have the skills yet to produce em i just let em go
i had the amazinh experience of hearing tracks or songs in my dreams that were awesome, that don’t exist nowhere but in my head. i somewhen read that creativity is really just reading out what your lower mind componist puts out.
