this guy is dead on (vinyl vs controllers)

I see his point about ‘purists’ disagreeing with peoples choice to like what they like. The people who are actually really into music, DJing and production are massively in the minority, everyone else just listens to/buys/go-to-see whoever or whatever sounds cool to them at the time. Most people don’t even care if the pop group they’re watching are miming. A lot of people like wrestling. That’s life.

guys fucking great…

I find it strange that someone can get so bitter to the point that they post a 10 minute youtube video rant. More so when he says he follows advice from someone about “just having fun” regarding the subject matter.

Sounds like this guy stopped having fun a while ago.

I have this niggling suspicion that throwing down and having fun would be far more effective than a 10 minute youtube rant.

I didn’t read all the post in the topic, nor all the comments on the video on Youtube but in my opinion, even if the most part of his contains good points, i see few points that are imho totally wrong.

1 - About guetta and faking DJing

It’s not ok to me, you don’t fool people, especially if they are your source of revenue. Ok entertaining is the goal #1, but if you are someone honest with yourself and the crowd, don’t act like you are DJing. Just stend on the stage and dance.
Balls are requiered for this, but at least it shows honesty to your crowd/fans.

2 - About people “liking what they like”.

To clarify before i even start my writing, we are talking about people that are not “into music business”. No producers/DJ/whatever. We are talking about random people/fans.

The truth can be told via quoting something i think i read here (not sure though)
“People don’t know what they like, they like what they know”.

The demonstration that this statement is true is easy to do :

if you can’t spread the world your tracks, so that people know about it, no one’s gonna like them. Therefore spreading ability is the main factor of the amount of people who like a track/genre.
So we can infer that if people like, ie, david guetta (no caps for this guy) that’s probably because they never had the chance to experience something else (whether it’s other Electro House tracks or even another genre)

This logic is flawed. Because something is not ‘liked’ because no one has heard it does not necessarily mean that things that are heard a lot are liked more.

There are lots of things that are widespread but not appreciated by everyone and other things that are harder to track down that are appreciated by many. As a general rule of thumb your theory kind of holds water, but you cant use it as an all encompassing rule.

Ok, I agree it’s not as solid as some mathematics demonstrations, but do you think that people “like what they like” ?
I just replied to a guy on YouTube that doesn’t agree with me either.

You can’t be too interested in music if you zippyshare
