VMS4, TSP2 and A4DJ?

VMS4, TSP2 and A4DJ?

Hi good people of DJTT forum!
Kinda new to controllers and would like a bit of advice. I have TSP2 (upgraded from TSP that was upgraded from Traktor LE that came with my Audio 4 DJ), 2x Numark Pro TT-2’s and a Numark DXM01 usb mixer (custom fitted with an innofader). I’ve been looking at controllers and quite like the look of the American Audio VMS4 (as money won’t stretch to an NI S4!)
What I’d like to know is can I control 2x TTs with timecodes via my A4DJ and 2x virtual decks all through the VMS4?

Thanks in advance,

Richie Twinz

I’d suggest the vestex Vci. Whichever model you think fits you right. If that’s off of your budget I suggest the Numark Mixtrack. Great Controller!

Can I run 4 decks with any of them though? 2 timecodes and 2 virtual using the controller as the mixer?

Richie Twinz

The vms4 is just a cheap rip-off of the traktor s4 with tons of bugs.
Plus the traktor s4 can use the internal audio interface for DVS.

yes and yes. You can do 4 decks if you layer everything using a modifier, but it works great on both controllers.

OK so can you explain to me how this would be set up please. My budget is around £300-£350 what controller would you recommend for the money and why?
Bearing in mind I have TSP2 and an Audio 4 DJ already.

Cheers.

Richie Twinz

For that money i’d recommend a Novation Twitch

Fucks sake guys read what he’s asking for. All these recommendations are ridiculous. He’s after something with a 4 channel mixer style midi controller.

Yes, the American Audio VMS4 will work fine for what you want to do as it is laid out like a 4 channel mixer and you can mix both timecode and normal decks internally with no problems at all. It’s a bit wasteful since it contains a sound card you’ll never use as you’ll be using the Audio 4 for that but I can’t think of any 4 channel midi mixers that don’t suck and don’t have a soundcard in them.

Few other things to note- midi isn’t as good for scratching, certainly not comparable to your innofader setup. If you want to scratch I would stick with real mixers or something like the S4.

Also have you considered getting an S4 and then selling on your traktor scratch pro 2 licence that comes with it since you will then have two? The certified upgrade costs about £250, maybe you could get a hundred or two for the licence?

I do NOT recommend any of the VCIs, the twitch or the mixtrack for you, even though they are all good in their own right. Just not at all suited for what you want to do.

MrPopinjay…THANKYOU!!!
A few further questions, you said I CAN run both timecodes and virtual decks together. Would I be correct in thinking decks C and D would be routed through my A4DJ and the 2 virtual decks through the internal soundcard? Also would fitting my Innofader into the VMS4 make that much of an improvement?

Uh I doubt you could mod it with the innofader. Even if you could I still think the fact it’s midi would be limiting. You could always get an arcade button or something and map it to kill the volume and use it like a transform button like on old scratch mixers.

Turntables connected to Audio 4 as per usual
Vinyl decks and digital decks mixed internally using the software mixer
One line out from the Audio 4 to the speakers serving as the master output

Does that make sense to you? No need to use the lower quality sound card in the controller.

PopinJay always paying attetion and not being a sheep baahing the same shit as everyone else.

another controller just like the vms4 is the denon dn-mc6000 which is alot better than the vms4 but a tad more pricey at $700-$800, but at that price you could buy the s4 and sell both the a4dj and your current tsp2

As cool as the denon is for timecode I’d recommend the S4 as if you’re carrying something that heavy I wouldn’t really wanna mess about with an audio interface.

Still it works as a real mixer rather than a midi one like the S4 which is awesome

The VCI 100. You’d have just that controller, and your mapping would be layered. So you’d have a button that when toggled you have control over second deck. I.E a button on deck b that changes it to deck d. Same with A and C. Need help mapping? contact me at alexduta@ymail.com

No no no no no.

Layering mixer controls is bat shit retarded.

Not with the VCI. And hey! that’s how the S4 was made!

Yes with the VCI.

And no, the S4 does not have any layered mixer controls. It features a dedicated fader, EQs filter knob, etc for each channel.

I never liked layered mixer controls, gets me lost in the middle of a mix when I need to cut the sound out of a deck, it’s annoying as shit

Yeah, it makes absolutely no sense and you should never willingly put yourself in that situation.

Yes that makes perfect sense fam, nice one! About the innofader though, it does actually fit straight in! Check their website for what it will fit into and the vms4 is on the list with no fraffing about with other connectors, jumpers etc.

Well I never. Awesome about the fader!
