What gear do you need for producing?

Hi Guys & Dolls.

Since I learned DJing and basic production by myself, I need some help here cuz I never did not music school, course or any music engineering programs.

What kind of gear do I need for producing good high class house music?

This is what I have been working with so far and all what I have:

HARDWARE
MacBook Pro 13" - 2.8.ghz 640gb 8gb ram
MacBook Pro 15" - 2.8.ghz 500gb 4gb ram
Cakewalk MA-15D Roland Monitor Speakers
Behringer Mini Mon Monitor Matrix Mixer
Audio Control Sound Card from NI
AKG UHFSR40 Wireless Mic
Maschine from NI
Kontrol X1 from NI
Vestax VCI100 DJ Controller

SOFTWARE
Logic Pro 7
Maschine
Battery
Peak
Deck
Traktor

Please let me know what I additionally need and why.
All help appreciated.
Thank you.

Logic is good. A keyboard would be nice. A Maschine would be great for banging out beats.

I forgot to mention that i have a MAudio 49e Keyboard.

Then you really don’t NEED anything else, but like I said a Maschine would be good for banging out beats. And maybe this book

[ame=“Amazon.com”]Amazon.com: Music Theory for Computer Musicians Bk/Cd (Book) (9781598635034): Hewitt: Books@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51rtpUU4meL.@@AMEPARAM@@51rtpUU4meL[/ame]

I’ve got Maschine and usually I use it to bang out beats as you say…
The books is really useful?
Cuz I bought a few books and winded throwing them away…
Is the book uptodate with the current stuff on the market and necessaries?
thanx mate

All you need:

  1. Computer
  2. Decent monitors
  3. Headphones
  4. Creativity
  5. Time

what about the sounds?
what do you guys suggest?
where should i buy off sounds?
the usual sounds in logic & garageband seem to be over used because I hear them in many songs which play on the radio…
where can i get good quality sounds?
do you think Native Instruments “Komplete Packages” are good and worthy?

All you really NEED is a computer, Ableton (or some other DAW) and headphones. From there you can start making music. That’s how I made my first EP.

Everything else is just to make that process a much more enjoyable experience.

You have a bigger list of production gear than I do so I would say you’re good to go. Just have to sit down and start learning your software/hardware and try to find your sound now. Once you do that you’ll be golden.

I like freesound.org for some basic samples, once you get into sound design you’ll realize that you only need samples (unless they’re vox) for specific characteristics (i.e. punch for a kick) because you’ll alter the fuck out of them til the original sample sound is unrecognizable.

The bottom link in my sig was made only using samples and DSP chains native to Renoise (epic program for sample-heavy music). Most of them are untraceable

Logic comes with plenty of instruments to create house music. With so many free audio unit plugin’s, you should have plenty of variety. Personally I think a fully programmable hardware synth that’s modular helps.

@ everyone … thnx so much for ur time and input. please feel free to always add soemthing if it comes to mind. also, any book suggestions except the one on this thread?

what about automation, using effects and etc where can i best find tutorials? on you tube there r like trillion of vids and i dont know where to start.

thnx

I put it simple, get free samples and fiddle your DAW like a kid. U have to know your sound n try recreating songs , u may start with aerodynamic.the riff can be created using guitar slayer in FL. Sometimes auto tuned cartoon sounds are also intresting .

@ kilobytekaushik

-where to i get free samples?
-when u say free… are they free like to be able to make money and sell ep?
-with aerodynamic. the riff? what do u mean… please rephrase
-also, what if i want to buy sounds? where is it best to get them? what do i have to keep in mind? ex vst instruments? do they work with logic on mac? or whats the right phrase of “instruments” is there for sounds?

thnx

Restricting use to a specific tool is good practice for learning what that tool does well & where it lacks. Start with Logic. I learn quickly if I have something that is already written so I can give all of my attention to the function of the program itself. When you feel comfortable with Logic’s instruments, plenty of free, 3rd-party instruments, effects & other tools, can be found on the KVR Audio website.

and where can i learn the basics of music production/audio engineering etc?
is there a specific website where all things would be listed?
including musical terms etc etc etc?
any books on this matter?
what if i need more info on music production and i dont know what exactly i am looking for? where should i start?

Youtube is a good resource oddly enough, tons of video’s on there.

youtube is a good source but i need one leading channel. or more info. how would i know what i am looking for?

again i rephrase

“and where can i learn the basics of music production/audio engineering etc?

No offence, but this site isn’t full of people who want to spend their days googling this stuff for you. It’s not that hard.

And if it seems like there are too many videos to watch, you have to realise that getting into production isn’t something that can be done with no effort. You will have to spend hours watching tutorials, copying, getting things wrong, fiddling and generally working hard at getting your head around it. There’s no easy answer and no way to learn everything in a couple of tutorials.

+1

Yeah, I’m more than happy to point you in the right direction but I’m not going to be searching youtube trying to find video’s for you. No one did that for me, and I didn’t expect anyone to do that for me.

Just man up and put the time into it already
