Good god yes, Traktor will run on a netbook if you want it to. You can probably upgrade the RAM if you want a little more zip, but have no fear Traktor will run on that.
Thanks for replying. I checked on Crucial and that model cant take more than 2GB Ram, so I wouldnt be able to upgrade it later. The reason I was worried is that the Sys requirements on NI website just say Intel Core Duo, with no mention of processor speed. 2.0 Ghz will be fine though you reckon? I’m being cautious because I dont want to have to buy another laptop if its not up to it!
fyi, Traktor currently doesn’t even utilise multiple cores. So I don’t know why they ask for a core duo, because it pretty much depends entirely on the clock speed and not on the number of cores. And yeh, 2GB RAM should be fine, it would run on 1GB but probably quite slowly.
Ah, really? When it says 2 GHz Core Duo, does that mean that for most things you would be getting 4 GHz of processing speed, or is 2 GHz the total of two 1 GHz cores? Sorry I’m a bit of an idiot with this, I haven’t bought a computer for about 6-7 years so am a bit out of touch with the technology ]
I just read the S4 review here on DJTT and the recommended specs are: Intel Core2 Duo 2.00 GHz or Core i5, 4 GB RAM.
This is getting me worried again, as the machine I’m looking at is Core Duo (not Core 2 Duo), and has max 2 GB Ram.
Thanks MaxOne, that’s kind of what I was worrying about (being future proof), but wasn’t sure how relevant that was.
I think I’m going to try and get something like this:
2.26 C2D with 2gigs of ram, runs like a charm and I don’t feel like I need more. You can get a better machine to be on the safe side for another year but you don’t NEED one for the S4 to run smoothly. It’s a late 09 btw
He’s running a Core Duo not C2D .. first intel edition macbook more ram the better also 32bit only so updating the OS when Lion comes out will be a no-no.
There was only a few months in the release date difference, you might pick up a c2d model around the same money which would last you a bit longer (unless its a really really good deal of course).
Edited post : Just looked at the release dates and I got my macbook the week the c2d came out so I guess 2 gigs is the limit. (hope no-one saw that!)
I saw, was just about to reply before you edited it!
I’m looking at C2D machines on ebay now as I want to be sure it’ll last me a while. I haven’t got cash to be chucking around on new laptops every year!
So, I finally got a MBP in the end. Got one 2nd hand for £650, 2.53GHz, 4GB. Just did a clean install of Snow Leopard and it’s nice and quick. Got my S4 coming in 3 days, cant wait to install it and start playing around. I’ve got my usual friday gig tomorrow and I really want to take the new mac, but I think i’ll be sensible and give myself more time to get everything set up and make sure its stable. Probably…
I’ve got a 13" 2008 Macbook (Uni body) , the one just before they all became Macbook Pro’s in 2009.
This machine is dedicated to traktor, ableton and audio related stuff only. Over the last 2 years its run Traktor Pro without any problems. I’m probably looking to upgrade to a new machine at the end of the year.. If the need arises.
Spec’s : 2 GHz, Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB Ram, Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard.
55GB (160GB Hard disk) free space.
I’m about to get a S4 and upgrade to Traktor2 in a couple of weeks and was wondering if there would be any advantages or if it’s advisable upgrading to Snow Leopard ? I know it’ll free up around 10GB of space but other than for that ?
FLX,
I have the same machine as you (macbook unibody late 2008). It had 2gb ram, 160 hd, 2ghz. It used to run without any problem with traktor scratch pro 3.
Now, I upgraded this machine to 4gb, 260 hd, still 2ghz and i’ve got the S4 controller and software, and it runs perfectly. No problems so far!
You should be fine with the specs you talked about. But I would recommend you to install a bigger HD. I always keep my laptop with at least 45-50% free to avoid problems.
