any IDM djs?

So lately i’ve been into IDM and other types of non-house electronic music. do people DJ this? i have yet to see a “local idm dj” though i’ve seen the big name performers pull off amazing sets. this is going to sound ignorant (sorry!), but do people DJ this stuff? how? is it mostly an Ableton Live set?

EDIT:
i am not dissing IDM! i totally dig it  i even have a new name that i am trying to produce under for it

There is a lot of “non-house” electronic music out there. You might want to be more specific.

Please don’t propagate IDM as a term, EDM is bad enough.

I second SirReal, I despise the term IDM.

Almost as much as I hate prog-rock and math-metal fans.

You mean downtempo right.
Like this?

IDM

WTF is IDM?

Indancable Digital Mess

Hahahahaha!!

Thank you for making me almost spill my drink over my gear.

seriously…what’s “IDM”?

It’s intelligent dance music and the term has been around since the 90s. It usually gets applied to stuff similar to warp record or artists like fsol.

I thought it was dead…

yes stuff like this.

and sorry about the term idm. i had no idea what else to call it.

There should be enough challenge to DJ this. Getting that even flow throughout your set is not easy.

That’s maybe why it’s performed as live sets more often.

If you don’t mind things getting a bit psychedelic, I’d suggest listening to Carbon Based Lifeforms and Aes Dana. They are more ambient, but when the beat happens you know the last 10 minutes of ambient were just a prelude to these amazing flowing beats. I’m sometimes amazed by how they flow so seamlessly from a soundscape to a really understated yet pounding kick. I use the more dancable parts as breakdowns in sets.

I have no idea what math metal is but prog rock is a legitimate sub genre with defining features.

Have a listen to some Mixmaster Morris sets. Pretty much what you have here along with a healthy dose of ambient and more eclectic tunes.

@Firebr4nd

Math-Metal, imo is shit. Prog-Rock is a legitimate sub-genre, but like I said in my post…it’s not the music but the ‘fans’ of the music.

Both progrock and mathrock/metal are pretty well defined Genres with particular features and, most of all, bands representing the genre.

Stop talking bullshit and educate yourselves!

This is the ONLY truth:
